J4 and J5 routes

I'm looking at the map of Imperial space in Supplement 11, and I see the J-5 and J-4 routes. J-5 connects the Aslan Hierate with the Aslan colonies, and J-4 seems to connect the Two Thousand Worlds with a colonial region just outside the Vargr Enclaves.

Okay. No problem, there.

But wehre are routes J 1 to 3?

Am I missing something?

IIRC there aren't any J1-J3 - those are 'rift' regions where worlds are sparse. The few worlds that are there are rather far from eachother, and can only be reached by J4/J5.

I think. Someone else will have to verify this.

the J4 and J5 routes are across rifts, expanses of space with very few star systems. a ship with J4 or J5 can reach enough of the few stars that are there to cross them and reach the more densely starred areas beyond.

I would say the J1 to J3 are everywhere the J4 to J5 routes aren't marked. They are the default, and would probably fill up the map if they were shown.

flykiller; ah-HA! After what... 30 years, I finally get this?

Silly me

Interestingly enough, with the way Traveller does fuel, there is no reason whatsever that a J1 capable ship couldn't cross the rifts on those J4/J5 routes.

The fuel usage for 4 Jump 1's is the same as 1 Jump 4. You spend more time in Hyperspace, but the Jump Fuel usage is the same.

Put 60% fuel in a J1 modified free trader and you could go anywhere...

The J4/J5 routes are there more to show you where how far apart the fuel is located...

But does a J1 ship have the fuel tonnage for FOUR J1s?

thanks

You might have to up the PP fuel that you carry a bit too. Figure 1 week in Hyperspace per Jump plus maybe 1 day in normal space between jumps to "recalibrate" and do some preventive maintenance then jump again. Four Jump 1s would take about 4.5 weeks which is longer than the "4 weeks" fuel that is "standard" on the PP. BUT, since you aren't doing a standard design anyway, there you go. Add 25% over standard if you are doing Jump 5 and you are good to go. That increase in Fuel will probably be off-set by the smaller J-Drive, so the net effect on interior space would be close to zero.

Has anyone done up a J-5 RiftRunner as a merchant/liner version? I'm sure SOMEONE has... converting it to a J1 version would be pretty trivial... Boring for the passengers, but trivial to design.

If you're using CT power plant fuel consumption rates you certainly will have to take that into account. But since they're completely and totally unrealistic, I just go with T4 or GT fuel consumption instead.

Most ihatei fleets are J3 capable. They take about a full year to cross the Great Rift along the J5 route.
