Is it out?

I heard that the T5 Playtesters got a CD of preliminary T5 material in early 2009, which is a couple of years ago now.

Have there been any further developments since then?

Yes. We have been receiving updates since the CD release. Still in beta though. But improved.

So does that mean it's likely to be released in the current decade? Or might that be too much to expect? ;)

I get the feeling that it will be released when it's ready. Not one second sooner. In fact with the issues t4 had, I am glad he want's to work all of the bugs out first. There's no real rush to put t5 out, in fact doing it while Mongoose is release so much MongTrav stuff would probably cause confusion. It may turn out that the "right" thing to do is to wait to release t5 till MongTrav's sales have slowed significantly. That way t5 could be used to help drive sales of the earlier edition's stuff or at least not directly compete with Mong Trav.

2008. But some material goes back another year, to 2007. And as Ishmael noted, he's been thinking about it for at least 10 years. Actually longer.

Release of the updated ship design system (December), animal creation system (February), and work on equipment.

As TashaG noted, it'll be released when it's ready. I don't know what's left to be done (besides some lists, like an equipment list for example) but that doesn't mean it's ready.

TashaG also brought up Mongoose Traveller. I think there's not much competition between the two systems. For one thing, Marc has no desire to undercut Mongoose -- after all, MGT is an investment on his part. For another thing, Mongoose has churned out adventures and supplements, some of which are generic enough to be useful for any version of Traveller, including T5.

I think T5 is a better-integrated resource, with interrelated toolkits which work with common benchmarks, and a rules system that makes use of those benchmarks.

And there are some interface points between the two game systems: Mongoose starships are usable in T5 (as are Book 2 starships), and PC weapons and armor created using T5's makers can convert to Mongoose numbers with a simple lookup. Similarly, you can use T5 to generate vehicles and robots for Mongoose. The most noticeable difference between MGT and T5 is in how skill levels are distributed -- and to some extent Mongoose skill levels map to T5 skill levels by simply adding to them.

The earliest playtest materials for T5 were before 2004... because I was still living in Anchorage proper, and I moved in fall of 2003 Some CGen notes, the task system, some small craft stuff... nothing terribly cogent, and very clearly T4 evolved a small bit. The 2007 disk is a world different from that early stuff. Still shows a T4 heritage in some design decisions, and still essentially uses a T4 style task system (ICK!).

It'll be done when it gets done. There are numerous varities of traveller and traveller universes available, so unless you absolutely have to have the latest version regardless, you should have plenty to keep you busy. I look at it as a hobby, really; I have no idea if T5 will ever be released, but quite a few people are enjoying puttering away at it.

Theres more pressing things to do, even with regards to traveller*, than pestering and bullywagging Grampa Marc.

*such as playing it.
