Interesting Pocket Empires

Hi all. Too much of Milieu 0 seems to revolve around the rise of the Third Imperium has anyone designed any really cool Pocket Empires that give the 3i a run for their money.

Actually, if I am not mistaken T5 is going to genre free with a slight basis toward Milieu 200 just as T4 was milieu free with a bias toward M:0. If that assumption has not been completely tossed plenty of rivals to the 3i in Milieu 200...

Zowie Sigg, that was fast!

Sorry kaf, I just assumed from your reference to T4. My mistake. Not like I haven't assumed wrong before, and you know what that makes me.

Yeah, no clue what T5's basis is going to be. Milieu free, yes, like MT's construction rules were milieu free. Of course the genre is still Traveller. But the setting? No clue. M200 was suggested three years ago by Colin, but I haven't heard anything since.

Maybe COTI could make some suggestions.

I'd like to see 1248 further developed, or even a time period further along, though not too much further. I want to see Traveller move forward, not backwards. I think you can still get that M200 feel in M1400, just with some areas where Viral Entities are part of the neighborhood, is all.

I'm all about the Future in my Far Future. ;)

But, truth be told, it's all good! New Traveller products are always good news for Our Old Game, at least in my opinion.

Looking Forward To It,
Flynn

Kafka: T4 milieux free my arse!

I couldn't run Mil. 1100 without fudging, using TNE, or buying later materials (FF&S2) due to a TL12 limit on included tech!

Just the basic rules are largely Milieu free, Aramis from a role playing perspective not neccessarily a gearhead perspective. Much of the rules scale you up to TL F, if you wanted them to. And much of Traveller is underpowered, so it remained shotguns in space just like the original LBB, so that never stopped anyone from playing it a higher tech.

And, you speak of FUDGE-ing as a bad thing, most of the time, in Traveller we have to fudge the outcomes...it is the nature of the game.

Well, I never played T4, but I always thought that there would be several rivals to the infant 3I as it grew. Ilesh should have had a good sized PE in existence. Perhaps several good sized rivals from the remants of the Vilani Empire, none as big as the one around Vland, but still decent sized.

M0 assumed the 3I was only a sector or so in size right? Figure any of the DOMAINS were probably based on adding large PEs to the 3I as it grew. Do that and you can place several rivals from that.

You probably shouldn't have more than 1 or 2 large rivals, otherwise it wouldn't develope into the Sylean Third Imperium, it might become the Ileshi Third Imperium with the Sylean Domain.. Can't fight a war on too many fronts and expect to win. Lots of little, sub-sector sized powers yes, big Sector-sized powers, probably not.

Kafka,

The early Imperium (and late Federation for that matter) had at least two relatively close and substantial enemies. One was the Chanestin(?) Kingdom. I cannot remember the name of the other.

How much of a problem were those other empires? Well, one early emperor (Martin IIRC) built his palace with an eye towards defending it from jump troops.

The early Imperium also deliberately bypassed opponents hoping to grow around them and cut them off from potential allies. The Imperium did this for decades. Indeed, it was already colonizing the Marches before it began the Pacification Campaigns that picked off the bypassed pocket empires.

We should also remember that the early Imperium avoided expansion towards the Rim for centuries. It had heard tales of powerful polities there and thus didn't move into the region until the late 300s and didn't begin aborbing worlds there until the late 400s. Terra and the Old Earth Union weren't incorporated until 588 for instance.

Have fun,
Bill

I did a setting a year ago or so that revolved around a pocket empire during the long night that had recently rediscovered J2 thus enabling spreading out from the local starcluster.

It was intended as a PBEM with a limited amount of RPing as all the players are members of the same gaming club. Anyway, the players each controlled a faction within the PE (think Republic of Rome (the board game) or Fading Suns). All the factions had one system for themselves (pop-8, TL-A) and a central planet (Pop-A, Tl-B) under "senate" control.

As we say in swedish "it (the liquid) ran into the sand" sadly...

I have a 52,000 word (and still incomplete!) setting looking at a pocket empire in the Gamma Quadrant of the Empty Quarter, written with a view to giving Cleon's crew a fight in the long run, or at least a shock (and more practice for the Pacification Campaigns).

I've had it about 6 years, and may be able to get it finished and out via BITS one day. It's inspired by Milieu0, but more written with an eye to CT and MT (never could get my simple-little head around T4).
