Imperial missle crisis?..hmmm

I was watching the history channel's documentary on the cuban missle crisis and got to wondering how can I do a similar situation in traveller?

what entities would be:

the USSR?
the impirium is the USA?
Cuba? :) darrians? swordworlds?, some other pocket impire?
Berlin/Germany(they where effectred more than I ever reealized)?

the characters?
JFK: careered as a noble/navel officer/diplomat?
Khrushchev:career as (possibly) belter?/diplomat?

others? (feel free to add)
Mcnamara?
castro?

the PC's are blockade runners? diplomats?

What you basically need is an independent world (or pocket-empire) between two larger empires. Up until recently it was a client state of empire A; after a successful revolution, it has become a client state of empire B. Empire B have stationed a large black-war-type raider fleet (the closest you could come to SSMs without jump torpedoes) in its new client state, probably in response to Empire A placing attack fleets in another pocket empire client state near the border to Empire B (the US missiles in Turkey). Kennedy and Khrushchev are represented by senior politicians/nobles (probably sector-level administrators) of their respective empires; Castro is represented by the client state's leader. Berlin would be represented by another pocket empire or independent world (both empires holding different parts of the same solar system?).

For a setting, find a border between two OTU empires (Imperium and Solomani, Imperium and Zhodani, Sword Worlds and Darrians, Solomani and Aslan, Solomani and Hiver, Hiver and K'Kree, Imperium and K'Kree, Imperium and Julian Protectorate, Imperium and a larger Vargr polity and so on). The border area should have a few independent worlds or pocket empires which would be the client states of both empires.

Taking a less literal metaphor you could have had a similar standoff in the run up to the 5FW. There could have been a political stink over the siting of the Imperial navy base at Quar ... which is outside, but on the wrong side, of the demilitarised zone (as defined in the 5FW boardgame) and a bit close to Cronor. Here the 3I is the USSR, the Zhodani is the USA, and Quar is Cuba. The cold war feel fits, and it makes the subsequent Zhodani action (starting the 5FW) more 'justified'. You could even use it to introduce the players to Lord Santanocheev's incompetance with the PCs on the 3I side while disagreeing with the tactic (though that may be doing a disservice to Khrushchev).

What about reversing things for the moment. Have the Zhodani Consulate play the role of the United States and the Imperium as the USSR. Here the Federation of Arden could be Cuba...however, as I like the Foreven Sector...one can easily make the Avalon Consulate to be Cuba and the League of Suns - Canada.

Let them try!

1971?! Why, that's when Chainmail first came out! You don't suppose ...

Hmmm. No wonder Gygax always ran around in that scruffy beard and ponytail getup. Give him a shave and a haircut, and there would have been an army of icepick-wielding commies crawling through the streets of Lake Geneva in less than a week.

If the Commies get uppity in LG, we Milwaukeens can always drive down there and keep the Republic safe once again from the Red Menace! :nonono:
