• Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
  • We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.

I am not going to miss you!

Heh, I thought you were storming off of the BBS or something :)

Seriously, we were discussing that some years back. Interesting that it's coming to fruition.

Heck, that's a deceptive title, I expected an angry first post and a whole long series of posts in Angry Red Mod Letters (example displayed). Well, it's good that it isn't. :)

Fixed that example for you ;) ...

Heck, that's a deceptive title, I expected an angry first post and a whole long series of posts in Happy Red Mod Letters (example displayed). Well, it's good that it isn't. :)

Yeah, title threw me for a second as well, but with the who and where I figured it was something else :)

Mods make those letters when they're happy?
I don't think I want to see them when they're angry... :)

Andrew, Dan and I are all inveterate punsters... So cute puns are unlikely to draw the Red Letters.

Hehe. Waited for some post count before visiting this one...

BTW: I am preparing my prospectus for Phase I SBIR grant submission re: my latest creation. The Multi-purpose Y-mount Anti-laser Snipe System. MYASS will cover yours.

[kit components include two, multi-use, #2 extended length pencils; 2 high intensity laser pointers with spare, field changeable, batteries; rotatable Y fixture and choice of all weather duct tape in camo and solid colors...].

Back to the topic the graphic of the trace is interesting but I wish there was some analysis of it. I'm curious why such a... twisted path to the target. Was the wind that bad? Was the target moving? Was the laser pointer shaky? Was there thermal influence from ground causing shimmer of the laser?

It seems like there are just soooo many ways to mess with the laser that I think I'd more trust a simple bullet and training.

I'm also curious just how much a smart round is expected to cost. Will it need special handling? Will barrel fouling mess with the receiver on the bullet?

I could go on :)

I agree this weapon is interesting but comes with problems. I think it will be a special weapon needed highly skilled individuals probably deployed to sniper units. It just increases their accuracy.

Why all the twist and turns I bet its a combination of the ideas you suggest and maybe the operators nervous hands.

The engineering behind the one we were discussing back in 2001 or 2002 had a number of side exhaust portals, such that as the shell travelled, it's onboard computer would fire side thrusters correcting it's path to the target. How that's achieved with a small arms bullet, even in a Traveller like setting, is a little beyond me, though a five inch shell for a naval gun, to me at least (as per the article that I had posted) is a little more believable.

I think I referenced Popular Science of Popular Mechanics. One of the two. they had a whole cover story on the thing.
