Huskarls Oath of Loyalty?

Putting this under IMTU because I figured this was a good place.

Here's the question: To whom do a Nobles Huskarls swear allegiance to ? The Noble? The Imperium/Emperor? Or do they swarn any sort of allegiance at all IYTU?



Heck, anyone know the answer for the OTU?

The way I do it is they are the household troops of a noble family, they swear allegiance/fealty to their noble employer and their heirs.

I go with this, but the troops are still subject too all Imperial Laws. Any attempt to overthrow* a Superior Noble* would subject all the participants to severe legal consequences, including the death sentence.

* Since we're talking IMTU, then my version of Arbellatra made Right of Assassination illegal, and later on legal precedents made this descend through all lesser nobility ranks. Cases of completely insane Emperors/Empresses are handled by "unanimous minus one" votes in the Moot. Lesser nobles are investigated by the Ministry of Justice with medical support from the Ministry of Science, and reports are filed with the Emperor/Empress for final decision (or Archduke for local knights or baronets).

It's a feudal society, and I presume a dedicated Imperium sanctioned household guard would have clauses regarding ultimate loyalty, perhaps closer to Samurai.

This is the answer I feel most fits the 3rd Imperium setting.

It'll be along the lines of the Swiss Guard Oath suitably modified along these lines:

"I swear that I will faithfully, loyally and honourably serve the Lord (name of Noble) and his legitimate successors, and dedicate myself to them with all my strength, sacrificing, if necessary, my life to defend them. I assume this same commitment with regard to the most Noble Emperor (Name) and his legitimate successors. Furthermore, I promise to the Commanding Captain and my other superiors respect, fidelity and obedience. I swear to observe all that the honour of my position demands of me."

How does that sound?
