Bruce

The Man Behind the Curtain
Marquis
Allo gang,
Tis I, Bruce, the man behind the curtain.

Hunter wanted me to pass along some information about his absence.
There has been a MAJOR malfunction at HQ.
It seems that Hunter's computer's hard drive has a serious malfunction.

Hunter says that he will be receiving a new hard drive forthwith to facilitate the transfer of informations on HQ's old hard drive.

He is in the process of trying to gather as much of the old data on the damaged hard drive and shuffling and moving it around to save it.
We all know how much of a pain this can be.

He also wishes for me to offer his sincere apologies on any delays and that anyone who needs to reach him can relay information through me, since I am on the phone with him everyday, to him.

So, if you need anything, just send me a private message and I will make sure and gather them all up and keep them safe for hunter to sort through as soon as he is back online.

Thanks for your attention to this post!

He has a new HDD in the mail to him as we speak. I know Hunter and I know he backs things upon a regular basis.

I think the HDD was just reaching it's life expectancy, and you know how these critters can be. One day they are fine, the next, they go BLAMMO.

I will make sure and point him towards this thread and make note of your link though. Thanks

I'd add an external drive (you can get a terabyte external drive now for ~ $500 or so) and have that make the backups (most external drives come with backup software). Better yet: run your system as a virtual machine, backup that virtual image daily or so, and you can simply copy that single (large!) snapshot file to another virtual machine & it will be exactly the same - data, programs, everything. That would be my suggestion (although I am sure he is inundated already with suggestions).

And, RAID, dagnabit! 4 drives, RAID 5 for reliability and mirroring.

And, thanks, Bruce, for coming out from behind the curtain for this.

Well sometimes, just sometimes...the wizard has to come out from behind the curtain and make an appearance. Heh.

A minor update. Hunter thought he had his drive fixed, he was sable, but then it went down again. I got a phone call at like 2 30 am about it.

He should have the truly new HDD today and he is getting some new memory sticks just in case it might be bad memory sticks in his machine.

Sometimes tracking down these problems can be a pain in the arse.

I hope that any replies to pm's has not been too long.

Thank you all for your patience.

I can relate. Spent last week reestablishing my internet connection after computer got fried.

I agree with the external drive. Used part of my tax refund to get get two units, one to back up everything on the computer & a smaller one for a secondary backup for my Traveller stuff. Moved my Traveller stuff on RW CD's some years ago. Worked fine until someone moved the disks where the data got erased. Anything not uploaded to my sight (included some art I commissioned) was lost. If my site crashed, I would have lost everything.

Weirdness abounds...

Uhm.

I received a PM from Hunter today (yes, seriously, it was from Hunter). It informed me that I've earned another infraction somehow :confused: Anyway...

I find this to be a very, very, very strange thing to happen to me because:

a) Hunter has not been seen around CotI for some considerable time now (for reason(s) known only to him);

b) No-one hereabouts has managed to contact Hunter - if they have, they've kept it under their hat very tightly - and I'm very sure that if communications had been re-established with Hunter, someone would have posted that he was/is able to communicate;

c) There are people on these boards (and elsewhere) who would like to contact Hunter about a variety of issues, some of which are very pressing and at least one of which involves money;

and yet today:

a) I get a PM from Hunter;
b) The PM comes out of the blue;
c) There is no post by Hunter anywhere telling me what I've done wrong;
d) There is no post by Hunter anywhere warning me that I've broken any rules and that I've earned an infraction.

So I am left to make my own conclusions, which gives me several options about how this PM was sent to me:

Option 1
The PM was sent by Hunter.

Hunter considers me to be:

a) A massive threat to the sustainability of the CotI membership, and:
b) A massive threat to the operational effectiveness of QLI as a viable commerical proposition,

that he put aside whatever he was doing (which is also whatever is keeping him away from running his business and these boards) specifically to PM me about an infraction he has deemed it necessary to give me.

Option 2
The PM wasn't sent by Hunter but it was sent on his behalf.

The PM was sent by someone who has access to Hunter's account here and was sent on behalf of Hunter, but with his knowledge and authority.

This, in turn, would indicate that someone on these boards is able to contact Hunter (and this also raises questions about why that person has not contacted Hunter about issues raised on these boards before now).

Option 3
The PM wasn't sent by Hunter and it wasn't sent on his behalf.

The PM was sent by someone who has access to Hunter's account here but the PM was not sent on behalf of Hunter, and was sent without his knowledge and authority.

If this is the case, it raises a whole massive can of worms about the trustworthiness of CotI Admins and Mods.

I find this all very, very, very strange.

Given Gruffy's 'Options', confirmation that Hunter sent the PMs would be appreciated. Is Bruce around to confirm or deny it? Have any Super Moderators heard anything?

Admin software shows hunter did in fact log in, and posted.

Grufty: your sig adverting your board, coupled with BR's promotion, is a violation of board policy. Someone was complaining about it to me via PM, so you were going to get an infraction on it one way or the other.

Vile: Perma-ban requested has been granted.

Gufty,

please do NOT change or delete your sig. It is not a problem for anyone here.

That (my bold of the quoted bit) is flatly wrong. It's been pointed out that complaints (plural) were lodged and more to the point it is obviously a problem for Hunter. You do know who's board this is right?

I must admit when I first saw Gruffty's post I was mystified too. It took a while to suspect it was the sig and not a post. I was going to PM him that maybe that was the issue but he'd already changed it and I think it's fine now.

EDIT: Until he changed it again sometime after posting this, to something that is likely going to be taken as a problem.

The problem was a perceived (though I think not intentioned) infraction of the rules.

Trent, this place is welcoming and open, very compared to any number of other boards that I've frequented, including other Traveller boards at times.

By all means protest by leaving, but I think you'll find if you want to threaten beyond that you won't have to leave voluntarily.

Given that the system shows a log-in by hunter, and all the correct flags are set, aside from seeing personal posts, no, I can't confirm it's Hunter, but I can say it appears to be hunter, and definitely was Hunter's account in use.

Arthur: I undeleted your post because I felt it worthy of a reply.
