how much do you pay mercs?

My players are going to do a mercenary ticket. How should I price their payment? Any guidelines or suggestions?

There have been a couple published adventures with merc tickets but I don't have them anymore.

As a guideline for T20 I might go with the base ship crew salary structure (p 347) appropriate to the task and adjusted like the cargo types (p 356). Five times the base for security type work (look tough but no danger) and ten times the base for hazardous duty (there will be some shooting involved).

eg.1 - Hired to chauffeur dignitary around to see how bad the place has gotten - Class it as Boat Pilot, Security work, making it cr2,000 base times five = cr10,000 per month, but its only a one week gig so cr2,500 final.

eg.2 - Pilot a ship through a blockade to deliver urgently needed supplies - Class it as Pilot, Hazardous duty, making it cr5,000 base times ten = cr50,000 per month, but rated as one week hazardous while in system and two weeks standard while in jump so actually cr15,000 for the trip.

Heh, see what happens when I say "I don't have that anymore." I just found my old MT "Assignment Vigilante" in practically mint condition because by then no one was playing in my circle.

A quick scan of it finds the standard escort fee structure is cr750 per starmerc plus cr30 per kiloliter of cargo protected. The accepted ratio of escort craft to merchant craft is 1 to 4.

Planetary tickets (those limited to air/sea/ground ops, I call 'em Dirty Tickets from the old slang 'dirtsider' for all non-spacers) are different. They average cr12,000 per month per trooper.

I forgot that you might mean a starmerc ticket in the first reply. You could do something similar to it using the standard charter rates for ships and apply the security or hazardous rate multiplier if required.

In my "old" group, we played Mercs for just Room and Board, depends on hard up they are, you dont have to stick to the book when using indepent Mercs, things change when using larger "units" of mercs, some times depends on their fame as a unite.

Essentially, you have to pay them based on how rare people with similar expertise are, and on the likely casualties. Offhand, I'd figure 1-10% of the cost of simply buying the weapons and training your troops to use them.

In my worst pirate voice:

AARRGGGH. I pay mercenaries however much lead the can take to get rid of them... :D

Book 4 says about 60K/month for a platoon on a low risk mission. 15K salaries, 22.5K shares, 22.5K for profit.

About 1.2x for a security mission up to 3x-5x for high-risk strikes and commando missions.

I'm sure there is a MSRP for mercs but what do you pay for bums-with-guns vice high speed, low drag, teflon coated, ex-Imp Spec Forces types?

You have to figure Merc's run the gambit in experience and willingness to perform their assignments to the letter. From street thug turned entrepenuer to the aforementioned career Imp soldier, you get what you are willing to pay for. If you only need a few local toughs, then it ain't much. If you need covert ops conducted under the highest possible secrecy in the worst possible conditions, you'll pay alot to make sure it's done right.

This a good reason why corporations or other NGO's would keep a stable of trusted, well trained mercs on a short leash.

And again, Reality Attacks! An Argentinian privateer named Hippolyte Bouchard attacked Mission San Juan Capistrano in California, 1818. When he demanded wine and supplies, the commander of the Spanish garrison replied that he could have none, but was welcome to all the powder and shot he could handle...

BTW, the Spaniards ended up surrendering the mission to Bouchard whith nary a shot. Bouchard's men had a merry time lootin' the place, and got so drunk they had to abandon several of their cannon because they were too hung over to get them back to the ship.
