Hodini's world

warwizard

SOC-13
Imagine if you will a world where the higher orginized fauna have developed short ranged teleportation.

Prey animals have a startle reflex that teleports them some 20 to 30 meters away, Carnivorous animals have a pounce attack where they materialize with their attack mechanism already in motion and instants away from contact.

Mix in humans...

Hodini's mouse:
Small nocturnal herbivorious rodent analog weight 15 grams number appearing one family group (mated pair and dependant offspring)
Bearing live young with a litter size of 8 to 15, and a gestation period of 4 weeks Hodini's mouse is classed as a hazardous pest if removed from it's ecosystem where the predators keep it's numbers in check.
The Hodini's mouse uses teleportation as an escape mechanism teleporting to it's burrow when it feels threatened or startled. As a result will appear to be quite tame and even bold. A mated pair can be "captured" by carefully removing the block of soil containing their burrow and transporting it away. The offspring once they are independant will teleport away from the home burrow find a mate and dig a new burrow.
Hodini's mouse has limited clairvision and can "see" locations with food and water and teleport themselves to it. No cage will hold a Hodini's mouse for long, and you'd better use supersonic bullets if you're going to shoot at them.

Flicker fish barnacle
A scooling species of sessile aquatic fauna. Number appearing: millions
The flicker fish is a filter feeder with teleportation as it's only means of movement, beds of flicker fish barnacles will teleport the small 5 gram soft bodied animal to the surface of the water where the zooplankton is more abundant, retreating to their own protective shells at times of excess danger.

:)

The world's other name is Pern!

(For 'Parallel Earth, Resources Negligible' as classified by the Exploration and Evaluation Corps. More formally, Rukbat 3...

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pern ;) )

Pern has teleporting mice and barnacles? I have not read the most recent books, but some supporting evidence from the books would be appreciated.

Also, consider the effects on other planets of teleporting mice.

Not mice... but one species of small predators (2-10kg) are teleporters and telepathic. Several related species are all telepathic to some degree; 2 species were geneered into larger forms.

I have read the earlier Pern books, Aramis, and I know about the flying lizards geneered into the dragons. I suspect that they not only are telepathic and capable of teleportation, but also have an innate levitation ability. Teleporting small predators have a potential to mess up a planet ecology, but teleporting mice as stated in the original post have enormous potential to devastate a planetary ecology. Consider the rabbit and cane toad problem in Australia, rats and cats in the sub-Arctic islands, and various animals in the Galapagos Islands.

Cool stuff. These would make an excellent JTAS article.
