I've tried background sounds and stuff, but it seems to get in the way more than actually help. I do accept that it could be user error (I think I would make a good assistant referee rather than an actual ref - pretty good at coming up with background and stuff, but horrible at presenting it)

It gives me an excuse to bring out the turntable and play Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds and especially the Space: 1999 Soundtrack on vinyl which I found at Goldblatts for 99 cents back in 1975.
Mwuah ha ha! Best month's allowance spent.
Ever.

I'm a sick piece of wood :nonono:

Very cool! I checked out the Space 1999 soundtrack, excellent stuff. I even found (completely forgot as I was a bit young to take in S:1999 when it was on TV) an episode named Mission of the Darians!

I don't use music, but I do use other audio.

A couple years back at Travellercon, my players had to interact with a space station's computer. Luckily, I had a HAL 2000 .wmv file for everything the players were trying to do.

It really added to the adventure.

For you D&D types, I've rediscovered the score for "Dragon Slayer" by Alex North. It's classical themed movie score music, and is somewhat whimsical as well as full of angst, danger and intrigue, as per the movie. There's even a medieval dance piece from a scene. I'm not big into fantasy gaming, but if you're looking for something to set the mood, then I recommend this soundtrack.
