Hard Times Cover

Gadrin

Just what is that thing on the ground next to the fellow's boot on the left side of the page ?

Enquiring minds and all that...

The little yellow thing with the rings? I always imagined it was some kind of landing beacon light or transponder. A "land here Travellers" thing on the backwater world they got into trouble on.

EDIT: Looking at it again just now, trying for a fresh perspective, I noticed the Pilot's hand is open and holding nothing. Could the item be something he was holding until they got shot at? Maybe a translator? Or a hand-comp for transferring the funds for the cargo laid out? Or some trade trinket he was demonstrating? Maybe a holographic display? Or a scanner he was using on the cargo? So many possibilities :)

Ah, it's a landing light, sorta like a runway beacon.

There's another one over by the landing gear.

Oh yeah, on the other side of the landing gear. Maybe that was why I went with landing beacon ages ago. I wasn't seeing it this time though when looking for other possibilities. Have to go back to my original then :)

It was hard to see, and I didn't notice the other one till later. That bulb looks like it's hovering instead of being on a stem/mount.

Given that the cover was a direct rip from a Star Wars book...I would not be surprised if it was a force echo or some such thing...it is amazing those gaming companies who scream copyright loud these days were quite the pirate in the old days. But, I guess no more than most companies of the 1970s.
