Gzirr!k'l Sector

I am interested in details of the Gzirr!k'l Sector (sandwiched between the K'kree and the Hivers), as it looks an interesting place for a campaign.

If it hasn't been detailed, what do people think is the best way to map it out ?

Thanks

I just checked the Traveller map site, and that sector does not seem to have any mapped systems or subsector details or anything, just the sector location on the big Charted Space map.

As for making your own map, just get some blank subsector maps and decide what density you want to use, and roll a lot of dice. Either that or find or make some software to do it for you - I had one I did in BASIC on my C-64 in college, but no longer have source or a machine to run it on. I have some blank maps I downloaded from somewhere - check in the File Library under CotI Features menu above - if you can't find them, PM me with an email address and I'd be happy to send them to you.

I have found a list of subsectors and alligencies at the Federation Development Agency (from the wayback machine). They are by Leroy Guatney

There is also a dot map which might be of use to me, although I am dreading going through it!

Good work! :) I'd guess those are unofficial, since I noticed that Traveller map now says that it is working from T5 sector data and it wasn't included there - so if you like what you've found, you can use it, but if you don't like it or want to change something, you would be free to roll your own and not conflict with anything official (if that is a concern).

Official data is used when available, but there's a lot of unofficial data on travellermap.com as well. But I haven't necessarily incorporated everything that was ever written - mostly out of ignorance of its existence. :)

If you tackle the sector and want it added to ye olde map, let me know and I'm happy to incorporate it. Also let me know if you want help with border generation and such other esoteric things.

Also...

Although not mapped, GURPS Traveller Alien Races 3 has plenty of details about this sector, and the Lithkind who populate several subsectors of it. It also includes details of the Hiver/K'kree war in the sector, and affected worlds.

I encourage you to grab a copy of that, and take on the task of mapping it!

Gzirr!k'l Sector - progress

Update --

I've generated a map, together with routes and names for the K'kree worlds. I've no idea what to do for Hiver worlds - if the Hiver's can't vocalize, what are the worlds named?

The GURPS Aliens introduces the Lithkind, who live this sector - and they seem to appear on the "Traveller Map" as a border, but the Traveller Map has a name for this, which isn't the Lithkind 'Empire' - so is GURPS more canon ? Not sure.

I need to check the data again, but should I post a draft here?

Thanks

M

I'd imagine that Hiver-named worlds would have a name that could be translated to English, possibly describing some fascinating aspect of the planet ("Fragrant Mountains", "Suspicious Craters", ...). Those with native life (or settled by client species) would have local names that may or may not have made it onto star charts. Toss in a handful of Ithklur names too - http://traveller.mu.org/archive/languages/ithklur.txt

We can get in touch with Mike McKeown who put together the adjacent Kaa G!'kul. He based it on old dotmaps by L.W.L. Guatney, which predate the GURPS supplement. I would give the GURPS description priority; Mike would probably accept corrections to make one of the polities the Lithkind's SELK.

Oh, and Gurvin. From CT:AM7:

"Most of the names of subsectors and planets applied to worlds in the Federation are derived from the Gurvin language, which, like the Hiver written language, is ideographic in nature and fairly easy to translate into Hiver language patterns. Most other names used in this book are human translations of Hiver or Gurvin ideograms."

I added Gurvin and Ithklur word generation to this sample page - reload to generate more words in each language.

http://travellermap.com/model2/wordgen.html

As always, most autogenerated words are pretty lame but there is usually one good one in each batch that makes a catchy world name.

This uses the language rules linked to above put together by Leroy Guatney and Mike Mikesh; a thread on the SJGames Forum points out that GURPS Traveller: Alien Races 3 also provides Gurvin language frequencies, but they are completely different. Pesky Hiver disinformation campaigns...

Work in progress

I've randomly created the sector, and added some basic routes - to make them work I have moved some worlds around. I generated borders (using allygen), and then corrected them with respect to the Kaa G!'kul sector.

I have rolled random K'kree and Gurvin names - not using your tables above, but I could change them if they work better. I've added the 2 worlds that seem to be known about (Lithkind homeworld and another world mentioned in the GURPS book).

I used the description for the GURPS Lithkind to determine that what is labelled as Krotan Primacy (Kr) is actually the SELK (Sk).

I think I need to work out how to change the borders generated, as they don't really make sense.

So, how do I post a rough map here so others can comment.

Draft

The resulting PDF is too big to upload to the gallery, so I've emailed them toinexorabletash for comments / criticism.

I'll post any replies here, so that they are visible.

PM Me, and we can make arrangements for it to go up in the files area, even if it is too big for you to upload.

Gzirr!k'l Sector map

Finally managed to upload - it looks like I can't upload PDFs, so here is a PNG instead.

I have fixed the edges and borders issues and moved some worlds around to make borders make sense. I've also added subsector capitals (not sure if they can be seen in the image), and matched the edges with the known sector to Spinward.

Most of the worlds are random, and I think there are not enough hi tech K'kree worlds, maybe I need to revisit this.

Obviously feel free to add comments and suggestions.

One comment...Nice work! Going to post the UWPs?

UWPs

Cryton

Yes, I plan to post the files here - I have some comments from inexorabletash that I should also post, as it might change quite a lot of things i.e. I may remove some worlds ("I am become death, destroyer of worlds"), and redraw some of the borders, once I happy that the stellar density is correct I'll post the raw files as well.

This next stage is actually going to be 'work' as it'll mean I can't just do it randomly!

Cheers

As I was reviewing the map/UWPs I realized that GT:AM3's section on the Lithkind actually has a ton of details about the astrography of the sector, some implied (post-war concessions to the K'kree, etc) and some explicit (like a world count for SELK, colony locations, world details for Izyme, etc). I fired those off to mmarquee which should keep him busy for a while. :)

I don't generally randomly-generate sectors (though I did create a few experimental sectors using the BeRKA generator), which may increase the time it takes me to "write" a sector, though hand-rolling the worlds would probably take even longer, and the only online generator I know is the (not too advanced) BeRKA one.
Also, I have work-in-progress data for the nearby sectors Luretiir!girr and X'kug.
