GURPS Sword Worlds

From what I have read (on the MGT board) they are two separate books for two separate lines.

I have also heard that the Mongoose version isn't really based on the GURPS version, which immediately destroys my interest in it. I thought the GURPS version was excellent, and that's all I need really and I have no interest in a different version of events/uwps etc. That said the preview on the Mongoose website looks OK.

GT Sword Worlds works for GT. MGT Sword Worlds works for MGT. "Decanonizing' only matters if you're a Traveller author, otherwise use whatever works for you.

Both GT and MGT are valid "canon". They are just following different Traveller timelines. GT created the split in IY 1120. Some would say that the split happened even earlier. I plan to add the MGT book to my Traveller RPG collection.

GT is a separate, and distinct, canon; it's not properly part of the OTU canon.

And the GT split occurs no later than 1115... because Dulinor doesn't set the assassination into motion. And the prep alone would have taken nearly a year with a fixed date at least 6 months prior (to get the info out to all the points canon says he did).

Most of it certainly works as canon for OTU. Authors were required to regard previously published information as canon for the GTU, so most of what was produced is compatible with OTU canon. (I say 'most' because there were some mistakes made). Apart from that, anything that's established about the GTU prior to the Change Point should, conceptually, apply equally to the OTU.

I put it a bit earlier than that, although I can't be precise. The earliest difference I've spotted is that in the GTU Strephon decides to elevate Norris to archduke early enough for Norris to leave for Capital in time to get there by 001-1117. In the OTU he postpones that decision (or decides against elevating Norris).

I remember spotting a facility noted in BTC as having been present for some time that wasn't present in TTA's coverage of the same world, which would push it back to 1105.

BtC had the lion's share of the mistakes made for the entire GT run (just my impression; I haven't counted them ;-)), so I'm not going to defend it with anything like the fervor I'd display for certain other GT books, but was this a facility that would definitely have been mentioned in TTA if it had existed?

In any case, I'd be more inclined to consider BtC to be in error than to put the Change Point that far back. But only Loren knows for sure.

"Decanonizing' only matters if you're a Traveller author...
It also matters if you're a referee who likes the new official material you buy to be compatible with the old official material you paid good money for back in the day and have used for years.
