GURPS Sword Worlds

Blue Ghost

SOC-14 5K
Knight
For anyone whose read this tome, can you give me a rundown on what you think of it? Is it worth purchasing for generic Traveller background material, or is it strictly a GURPS affair?

Thanks much for any reply.

BG,

Let me start with these provisos:

- Hans Rancke-Madsen is one of the GT: Sword Worlds authors. I consider him to be one of my best friends in the Hobby.

- Paul Drye is another of the GT: Sword Worlds authors. I consider him to be among the top 2 or 3 RPG writers current and an excellent general writer too.

Keeping all that mind...

BUY IT

Hans, Paul, and Robert Prior produced an absolute marvel. Their Sword Worlds book for GT neatly addresses all previous canon, presents a nicely detailed picture of Sword Worlds' history, culture, and society, and even "solves" the many problematic UWPs in the Confederation. Like it's near contemporary in the GT line, Interstellar Wars, Sword Worlds is everything a Traveller sourcebook should be and can be.

Seriously. You're going to read and re-read Sword Worlds, and then you're going to wonder why there haven't more Traveller books that approach it's quality.

Buy it, you will not be disappointed.

Regards,
Bill

I wholeheartedly agree with Whipsnade. Most of the GURPS Traveller books
are very good source material, and this one is among the best. :)

Very cool. Thanks.

Whipsnade, can I send you another story I wrote? I wrote this one for Roger's online Trav mag, but I'm not happy with it, and need some feedback.

BG,

Please do. I'll give you any help I'm capable of.

When will you have the next revision of the story we were talking over earlier? I felt it showed great promise and have been looking forward to your changes. Have you shelved it until inspiration strikes again?

Regards,
Bill

The short story; I got inspired by Iran's going-ons, and banged out something quick and dirty. I passed it onto Roger, he gave me some feedback and think it's okay. But I'm not happy with it.

The fighter pilot story got shelved because I got busy with something career related. That, and it felt like a rehash of a Bab-5 episode. I really didn't want that, so comitted it to my subconcious to mull over :)

Story coming in 5... 4... 3...

GURPS Sword Worlds did not seem like the typical Traveller add-on or module. It was well thought out and written in such great detail with a rich enough history and that doesn't even include the planet descriptions. The book could easily be used as a sourcebook for other RPGs.

GRUPS Sword Worlds.

It is a very clever, very space opera interpretation of the whole hagiography of the Sword Worlds.

It is great for framing concepts and such

The Sword Worlds have always captivated me. To begin with when I was 12 and my uncle explained the dynamics of the Spinward Marches to me he talked about the Confederation being a Terran foot hold on the far side of the galaxy.

The JTAS#18 article further wet my appetite. The GURPS supplement while like Prometheus stated was rather space opera, has some interesting options which have fueled my imagination. I like the idea of gaming the settlement era (-400/399 TI) and the Era of the foundation of the latest Confederation.

I have to give Kudos to the writers while they came up with some odd stuff it was very creative.
:D

Yes, I've always been fascinated by them too. I intend to get this sourcebook as my next purchase, even if I don't generally play GURPS (I have the main book and a few other supplements like Far Trader, since I collect Traveller rules sets and play mercantile campaigns) but this sounds like a great background resource for CT Spinward Marches gaming.

I would it is worth it .... GURPS ( which I don't play) puts out good source material.

So he misspelled it big deal.:nonono:

It's a Star Trek joke. The first season episode "Miri". The "onlies", children under the age of puberty, were the only ones alive on their planet. No "grups" (grown-ups).

They had a game where they attacked Kirk's crew, chanting "Bonk, bonk..."

Hence, GRUPS and bonk-bonk.;)

At the risk of sounding like a parrot, I think I would have to agree with the above consensus. The GURPS Sword Worlds source book is chock full of very useful, interesting, and playable information. Very little in the book is GURPS specific, so any Traveller game ought to benefit from the book.
