I would guess that SJG will not be publishing the Imperial Navy book. They did show renewed interest a few times over the years. The conversation usually went:
SJG: "What's the status of this book? Are you still willing to write it?"
Me: "It's more or less written. You have a draft on file. Still awaiting the editorial comments we were told were about to be forthcoming so we can proceed to the final draft."
SJG: "Right then."
Silence. (Months)
SJG: "What's the status of this book? Are you still willing to write it?"
Me: "It's more or less written. You have a draft on file. Still awaiting the editorial comments we were told were about to be forthcoming so we can proceed to the final draft."
SJG: "Right then."
Silence. (Months). Repeat a couple more times.
Me: "What is the status of the book? Do you want it or not?"
SJG: "Yes, I think. Maybe. The previous line editor knew about this, I don't. I'll find out." (Jon and Loren said this about 3 times between them as first one then the other contacted me in the capacity of the Traveller Line editor.
(weeks pass)
Me: "So, what about the Navy book?"
SJG: "Oh, that. Yes, well, someone who's not me knows about that. I'll get back to you in a few days."
(More months.)
SJG: "What's the status of this book? Are you still willing to write it?"
Me: "As I've told you several times, we wrote it and subitted it already. You have a draft on file. Still awaiting the editorial comments we were told were about to be forthcoming so we can proceed to the final draft."
SJG: "Right then. Okay. I'll get back to you in a few days."
(Months pass)
Me: "OKay, so what do you want to do about the Navy book?"
SJG: "Oh, that. Well, I'm not sure of the status. Are you still interested in writing it?"
Me: "Yes, and you have the manscript on file from years ago. Do you actually have any interest in publishing this book or not?"
SJG: "There are some things I need to look into. We'll get back to you in a few days."
Months pass without further communication.
At this point it's been YEARS. SJG have never kept any of their promises to get back to me, look into things or whatever. So I decide to make some use of the work...
I extensively rewrite the manuscript, add some things, remove a lot of it and publish a book based on the work I did a few years ago but substantially different from it. Somehow the misconception arises that I have published a manuscript written by someone else, that I've never seen, and that was rejected by SJG.
That's pretty much how it happened. Some details may be misremembered, but certainly there were several iterations of the 'are you still willing to write this? - It's done, you have it - Oh, I'll get back to you' conversation followed by silence.
