Grav plate covered asteroid

Was it ever established anywhere just how artificial gravity works? Do you need grav plates both above and below to generate the field, or can you make do with just floor plates? I've been thinking about small planetoids with artificial gravity that holds an atmosphere. Would something like that be possible in the OTU?

I have seen another thread or two, and IIRC, there was no consensus, let alone one from canon.

I think you could have it just from one direction (floor plates). IMTU, hulls will have plates lining them or essentially equally spaced, to provide inertial damping. Floor plates provide a field which attenuates fairly quickly as distance increases. That said, lining an asteroid could involve a spherical installation, where the fields were strong close to the plates, and attenuated (and mutually interfered) as altitude above the "floor" increased. Your atmosphere would be (maybe imperceptibly) denser close to the "floor." So IMHO if all your living space and other systems, like hydroponics, were close to the "floor" then this would work fine.

You could then have fusion-powered
 
I don't know of any canon sources, but I remember a post Aramis put here a few months back, where he stated grav plates are required both above and below, in order to move things around (in a cargo hold), etc.
Not sure if that's canonical or not, or just his TU, but he certainly knows a lot more about the subject than I do. :)
 
CT canon is pretty clear on this.

Every CT adventure and supplement that has a detailed ship write up mentions in the interior conditions - gravity section that there are floor plates generating the artificial gravity.

There is not one mention or even hint of a mention of ceiling mounted components.

What artificial gravity is and what range it has is another issue. It certainly can't have the same range as the 1g field produce by a planet or every ship would be pulling moons out of orbits ;)
 
Would a hollowed-out asteroid set spinning to provide artificial gravity do the trick, or are you covering the outside of the asteroid with grav plates and domed-over ecologies?
 
Actually, it sounds like he was wanting to hold a biosphere with the grav plates. (I think the limiting factor here would probably be power - a lot more than gigawatts would be involved!)
