THE RULES:

This poll only applies to people who have bought their first Traveller book (any version of the game) in 2003 or 2004.

1) IF YOU BOUGHT ANY BOOKS FROM ANY VERSION OF TRAVELLER BEFORE JAN 1ST 2003, DO NOT POST ON THIS THREAD!

2) If you've only seen the books and don't own them, I'm not interested in your response here either.

3) I also do not want to hear from anyone going about how X version of Traveller is better than Y version of Traveller, and I don't want to hear their opinion on whatever version a given respondent bought.

THE QUESTION

This is simply a survey.

On this poll, I am only interested in hearing from newcomers to the game - defined here as those who bought their first Traveller product after Jan 1 2003. (and preferably who had never paid any attention to Traveller before then).

If you are a total newcomer to the game of Traveller as defined above, I would like to know what version of the game piqued your interest enough for you to buy it. Describing why you bought that particular version in a comment is entirely optional.

I'm just curious about what versions of Traveller are most attractive to people at the moment. I imagine there might be a bias on this board towards T20, but it'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

I listed the CT Reprints and original LBBs separately - the former implies you probably saw them in a game store recently and bought them there, the latter requires some degree of actively searching them out.

Good question.

Um.

Well, you can answer the question in a comment anyway, so feel free to answer it that way instead of on the poll.

T 20 is the game i bought because i assumed that it was the only traveller that would be expanded with new materiel. wa11eye

Anyone else? I can't believe only two people have bought into Traveller in the past year.

I would wager that most people who frequent CotI do not meet your requirements for voting which IMO should produce a very small subset of CotI posters. Traveller as a game is about as old as RPGs are. The two latest published versions of Traveller rules were both released before Jan 1, 2003.

I am hardly a diehard Traveller player but I played some CT back in the day etc. and also purchased T20 in 2002 (not to mention previous Traveller rule books prior to 2003) so would not qualify for example.

As for getting the results without voting I would suggest you, as poll creator, post the results after a suitable time / number of votes.

HTH,
Casey

Yeah, I'm going to leave this up for a few weeks or until I get a decent number of votes. If it just ends up lying abandoned for a long time then I'll close it and post the result.

I was just wondering whether new people were mostly buying T20, or GURPS Traveller, or the CT reprints (or any others).

My belief - based on what the market is like nowadays - is that T20 accounts for most of the new sales, followed by GURPS Traveller, with barely any CT reprints being sold to new people.

I imagine one can't tell from the sales data (which is largely confidential anyway, AFAIK) how many books are being sold to people who are totally new to the game in any of its forms.

I played CT for a bit pre-OTU then didn't touch it again until 2003, at which point I did a quick survey of the options and bought T20. So I'm not eligible to vote.

I have the same impression.

I think most of the completely new Trav players are existing GURPS/D20 players who think "oh look, a new game in my system."

I reckon returning players, who used to play CT/MT, either buy GT/T20 if they've been playing GURPS/D20 in the meantime or buy the reprints if they haven't.

I can't imagine GT ever attracting many people who don't already play GURPS, because it just seems like too many books to try the game out. T20 might attract "outsiders" better once it's seen to be playable with two books (OGL rulebook and a setting book with starter adventure).

I inherited my Mega Traveller books and Spinward Marches map in the mid 80's and still had them up to only a year ago (they got lost in a house move
( ).

I've considered buying the GURPS version but haven't committed myself to doing so yet.

Umm, I have bought, in the past year, most of the CT reprints, MegaTraveller players and GM books, T-20, and a lot of the GURPS Traveller stuff. But I ain't a newbie, as I still have my LBBs from 1980 (actually earlier, but that is the earliest I can remember having them.)

Oh and the T2300 box set.

But I ain't played a game of it ever. I have always wanted to, love deckplanning ships, (I had been doing it since the 6th grade. Only after Traveller came out that I had an actual system to do the deckplans instead of just winging it with whatever looked neat.) Just never found a group that was interested when I was gaming.

I forgot to add I also picked up a couple weeks ago, the TNE book. Which means that other than T4, in the last year, I have bought products from each and every version of Traveller.

I bought t20 due my group was getting tired of all d&D (all editions) with different dms. Some wanted to do a traveller game but either too busy, too lazy, not willing to load out books, or would for get to bring the books. Since the book had not gone to press when I ordered I like the discount and thought to do one.
However about 3 months after I got the book the group went into limbo. Now A new site if available for the group and they asked for a comapaign I currently working on it.
