Far Future gadgets (and toys for the rich)

Ok
We have discussed homes in the far future. How about the stuff people want.

1) Everyday gadgets people will use (Personal organizers, Video glasses, computer backpacks with eye wear moniters, grav scooters, chamelion clothing, hydration circulation clothing, games, etc)

2) Toys for the rich (larger yahts, grav Recreation homes, food and drink dispensers, time telling devices, table games, robots, personal weapons (lethal or non lethal, etc)

Stuff our players will need/want and seek for themselves or be invited to enjoy by patrons. ;)

I would think one of the Everyday Gadgets would be:

FOREARM COMPUTER
Autonomous Agent, Chrono, Timer, Alarm, Uplink, Long Range Commo, Holo Display and HUD Display, Translator, Personal Locator, Weather Sensor, Personal Datalog, Audio/Video Recorder

Now why did scenes of Woody Allen's movie "Sleeper" flash through my mind reading that

But hey since you got my brain* going that way what about Orgasmatron technology? Of course if we go this route the thread will be condemed to Random Static. I'm not so sure it didn't belong there in the first place ;) I kid, I'm a kidder

* "My brain! That's my second favorite organ!"

Hair with nanobots that can change the color of the hair at will. (cf. "Andromeda") AI android with incredible strength, speed and intelligence as a personal assistant/bodyguard. (cf. Andromeda) though having a beautiful, sexy assistant is so cliche.

Programable adaptavie camoflage clothing. The technology can be also used to change your clothes colors depending on your mood, whim, location, social status, etc.

I think the PDA will become a ubiquitous personal communications tool. Others have already said it but it will feature as a component in so many other things as to make repetition here mandatory.

The PDA will take many shapes and forms but will become the defacto communications device for voice, video and data. It will also be the repository of personal information although I would expect to see this duplicated in personal space on the planetary net and accessed by the PDA thus overcoming the "I've lost my filofax I can't run my life" syndrome prevalent in the 80's.

Some may see the PDA as a subdermal implant although this is a bit cybertech and would prevent the implanted person playing in casinos. It should certainly be possible for the PDA to be flexible and wearable if you so wish.

Driverless cars is a pretty obvious thing (I take my example from Gibsons 'Count Zero'). Again these could drop you at the theatre, go and park themselves and then return at a summons from your PDA which would probably have a audio interface allowing you to speak commands to it rather than pick with a stylus or (god forbid) type.

Climate control, not only of your car or house but also of your estate/country/continent/planet.

Clothing that changes colour certainly, how about changing style (within reason) say able to lengthen or shorten so a short sleeved shirt could become a long sleeved shirt or vice versa, or a tie that could become a scarf. Also some way for clothes to stay fresh when worn so that at the end of the trading day you still don't give off BO.

How about a material that is flexible and almost weightless but which can be made to form rigid sheets when, say, a small electric current is applied to it. Great for emergency shelters or holdalls/backpacks when suddenly a lot of things have got to be carried.

How about a public transport system that works, judging by the UK that's a long way into the future.

OK, a serious one this time. How about a personal home AutoDoc? Probably geared towards cosmetic procedures but capable of handling common home injuries.

"Darling you simply must try my AD's new face program."

Also a great hangover cure or emergency overdose treatment for those parties that get a little over the top.

And related, how about a personal home lowberth.

<blibvert>

Got some non-productive downtime in your schedule? Maybe you're waiting for the tri-d tech to make a service call...

"We'll call between the hours of 08:30 and 17:30."

Well just pop in your HomeLowBerth and don't waste your youth waiting. Your HomeSmarts will cycle your HLB when the tech finally shows up and you can get back to your life without having wasted a minute of it.

Order today! Don't lose another minute of your life!

IMTU: Clothing starts to seriously change at TL-11 & 12, and at TL-13+, it's very different.

Note: When Nanotech is referred to below, it is not free-roaming or infinitely convertible/adaptable.

Note: Integrating some of the features into the game-rules isn't something I've spent any time on (at all). The following is just a generalized "vision".

</font>
  • TL-9: Advanced synthetic fibers. Stain, wrinkle, and tear-resistant. Light-weight ordinary clothing-like bullet-proof armor (good against light-caliber weapons and resistant to edged weapons).</font>
  • TL-10: Electronics and clothing merge. Extremely expensive and limited "thermoptic" camouflage. PDAs of limited power can be a part of clothing. Totally flexible Video Displays. Clothing that can convert into any color. Nanotech is used in the manufacture of clothing, making basic clothes inexpensive, and fancy or multi-feature clothes extremely expensive.</font>
  • TL-11: Basic clothing is immune to stains, wrinkle proof (no ironing necessary), and very strong. Edged weapons wielded by ordinary strength humans cannot penetrate the basic material, and .30 caliber pistol bullets bounce off (impact is still delivered, of course), extremely difficult to tear (must use machinery) and long-lasting, typically with a lifespan of 20 years under tough conditions. The ability to work individually on these types of cloth requires highly specialized and expensive equipment. Home sewing with such cloth is impossible. Reliable "thermoptic" camouflage. Military/Police quality personal "cloth" armor is very strong and can stop .50 calibre bullets (although the armored individual is still heavily injured by the impact). Slim caliber AP projectiles from Gauss and Needler/Flechette weaponry prove the best bet against such armor.</font>
  • TL-12: Clothing and Nanotech begin to merge. "Thermoptic" camouflage loses its "periphery border", and can now operate in water without failing. A curious phenomenon occurs, as nanotech machinery arrays built into the clothing tend to wear-out in 5 to 10 years, clothing's lifespan is actually reduced. First self-cleaning clothing.</font>
  • TL-13: Integrated nanotech. Clothing now entirely made of nanotech machines. Basic clothing can stop most pistol bullets and lightweight rifle bullets, as well; and the ability of the material to pro-actively distribute impact reduces kinetic injuries. Military/Police Armor can stop any non-AP specialized bullets of .50 caliber or less (up to an as yet undetermined velocity), Impact is substantially reduced. Thermoptic camouflage can now store heat for up to 4 hours, considerably increasing it's per-incident operational lifespan. Computers of considerable power are integrated directly. Communications, sensors, and medical devices of various kinds are optional add-ons. Continuous high-definition record of medical status is now available (when Medical sensors are optioned), aiding doctors by providing an extended medical picture of their patients never previously available.</font>
  • TL-14: Clothing becomes re-configurable (shorts become pants, tank-top becomes full-sleeve, body-leotard becomes an evening dress. Law 9 or higher prohibits sale of this type of clothing to civilians (too useful for disguise). Clothing is now capable of keeping its wearer clean. Options are available for plumbing system attachments, making is possible to avoid visits to the restroom for some time. It is considered to be a major productivity enhancement by Megacorporations paying for highly skilled craftsmen (breaks are allowed in most cases; but must-go visits to the restroom are eliminated).</font>
  • TL-15: Clothing integrates all previous features, and is much less expensive than previously (of course loading full options raises that expense dramatically). Option for re-configurability to emergency limited vacc-suit (for passengers aboard ships who worry that in case of disaster, they won't be able to don a suit or climb into a bubble fast enough).</font>
At TL-13, many features, like thermoptic camouflage, are easily installed. Law 3 or higher prohibits its possession by civilians.

Law 7 or higher prohibits the inclusion of armor-like features in clothing available for civilian sale.

OK, RoS, I was with you until you gave me wrinkle-proof clothing at TL11! That is just too much handwavium for me - you probably believe that the Federation eliminated money, too!

Oh, wait... I see, it's bullet-proof, too. I understand now why it's wrinkle-proof. Of course, you can't sit down.... :D

Rainshield&#153;

(These stats are a complete WAG.)

TL-13: Cr500. 1.5 Kg 4 hour duration. An adaptation of the Grav Belt. Fits over the shoulders, held on by loops around both arms and a strap across the chest. Projects a gravity field that draws snow and rain (and dust or ash, as well) away from a 1.5 meter diameter area over the wearers head. Cannot deflect rocks, arrows, or bullets.

(Yeah, yeah, I know, if you let one gravity based force-field exist, you have to let them all. But still, I like the idea.)
