A commercial consortium consisting of the Royal Sutekh Merchant Marine, Xanadu Shipping, Friedland-Raumfracht (Friedland Space Cargo), The Thevins Corporation, and Купцы Святой Екатерины Kuptsy Svyatoy Yekateriny (St. Ekaterina Merchants) have made an offer to the various governments of New Africa to open up New Africa as a port of transit for shipping heading off to the New Silk Road.
A jump 3 to Shurrupak from New Africa, instead of having to travel all the way to Asgard thence to Loch Lomond, would cut off both time and distance, creating a considerable cost savings to merchants from the worlds involved in the consortium. The economic benefits to New Africa would be considerable due to the very increased traffic which would be constantly moving through their system.
The New Caledonian Ambassador to New Axum, issued a stern statement that any ships moving through “New Caledonian” territory should be advised that they will have to clear New Caledonian customs in Shurrupak before moving “south” and that increased customs duties would accrue to those ships which are not using the port in the Asgard system due to the need to protect investments.
The consortium responded by pointing out that New Caledonia did not own the system, and therefore could not charge ships which did not land on the planet any “customs duties” and since the New Silk Road stations were owned as a joint venture of New Caledonia, New Canberra, New Texas, and Xanadu, that New Caledonia had no authority to stop ships which wished to travel to New Africa. The RSMM said that any attempt to enforce “spurious and legally questionable customs duties” on its ships would be considered an affront to the government of Sutekh.
Plus the consortium stated if New Caledonia wanted to play hardball, then they were prepared to set up a Silk Road station in the Uruk system to avoid New Caledonian customs parties. We are further informed that New Canberra has begun the process of getting together colonial parties of 1,000 persons each to settle on Shurrupak, and Uruk in order to have some claim to those systems. All three worlds (New Texas, Sutekh and Xanadu) have said that if New Caledonia pushes the issue, they will build their own space platforms in the systems so that their ships, and others can bypass New Caledonian obstruction.
New Texas has stated that if New Caledonia decides to “get tough” and start interfering with the trade to and from the Aslans, then New Texas would have to rethink the currently very favorable tariff policies it has with New Caledonia. New Texas’s Secretary of Commerce also said that it could potentially route its not inconsiderable traffic from the Wayfarer Belt to New Africa instead of via New Caledonia/Asgard. In addition to that news, New Texas is considering placing small colonies on Shurrupak and Uruk in a cooperative status with the New Canberran government.
Queen Miriam has said that she is all in favor, and would grant the consortium most favored trade status. Several other governments have seen the benefits of this idea, so they are allowing New Africa to be used as a way station for the trip to the Aslans. Queen Miriam has been part of the negotiations from the very beginning. New Axum and M’Botoland have formed a joint venture called New Africa Trading Associates to get part of the trade and the benefits from increased traffic through the New Africa system.
So the question then becomes, is New Caledonia willing to pull in its horns, or will it force the issue, and potentially make it into an interstellar problem? What other worlds will start using the new terminus in the New Africa system vs, the already established one in the Asgard system? Or will a trade war break out as each side attempts to make their system the more attractive to trade vessels? Time will tell.
