"dirt"shoreman-(unions in Traveller)

BluWolf

SOC-12
With the "corrupting" of the Vilani Imperium by the Men of Sol would they have spread the concept of organized labor to the stars?

If so, how would Cleon have dealt with it in his plans of empire? Did he see it at conflict with his concepts of "social honor" or did he include them in his plans and consider it part of his strength?

The recent issues in California got me thinking about what labor issues would be like if the "lowly" cargo pushers on dust ball 541 decided to strike with the backing of a few billion members of the union???

ouch!!
I hadn't thought of that....

the thought of all those A & B ports going on strike at the same time.....all those merchants sitting in parking orbits or grounded not able to unload or load....

riots?...
troops?..

any ideas anyone?

There was an episode of B5's first season that covered that. It was kinda cool.

Given the radical right wing nature of some posters to this forum I'd excercise caution using the U-word though.

Look for the union label! Member of the Classified Staff Association/District 925
Service Employees International Union, AFL-CIO and proud of it! Go Labor! Wobblies Forever!

hey Fletch you missed the labour day debate.

Someone was posting about how socialism was treated in their campaign and got roasted by several die hards as a crypto-Communist basically because they'd fought communists during the cold war.

That's Why I warned you about the U word. Myself, I've seen too much politics and ugly stuff within Unions to see their current vs. historical worth. I also don't understand why, as a health care professional, I'm under the aegis of the Canadian Auto Workers Union (??????).

Labour Unions are okay, a tad too poverful here where I live but...

As for what would happen if the longshoremen would strike, that's nothing compared to when the air traffic controllers stike. Them and the garbagemen hodl power, I tell you! ;)

A quick referral to the word "union" reveals only the Union of Sufen (a pocket empire/ HardTimes-MT/ subsector C-Diaspora) in the BITS periodical bibliography, BluWolf.

No mention under "labor/ labour" either.

What does that mean??? ITS YOUR TRAV universe! They're all there fer you to create lad. Corrupt, efficient, inefficient, its there.

I imagine the Starport Authority workers in the Imperium are a Union (and limit what types of robots can be used there, fer an "issue")...and as Squid has said, the garbage man's union is tough! Look at 11million folks in NYC-at the mercy of these fine fellows.
A Insystem Pilot's guild/union for insystem lighter's is the partial cause of a major brouhaha in CJ Cherryh's book 'Heavy Time"--along with Unionized belters!

Of course they exist...you just have to flesh em out some. As a GM, its yer job! And, an adventure!

I don't see any reason why unions wouldn't exist on most industrialised worlds. I think they would exist, whether the Imperium approved of them or not -- and most likely, the Imperium would grudgingly tolerate them, at best.

It would be difficult for unions to coordinate actions between worlds -- economic conditions would vary a great deal even between adjacent systems, and communications lags would make coordinated action difficult.

Any Union that has a strangle hold on the public should be FLAMED!!!!!....after saying that i can say.....FLAME management if they are "oppressing" the workers!!!!.....

IIRC, in some of the GT stuff (Starports and/or Far Traders), wasn't there a system in the Spinward Marches that was taken over by union workers? It was, I believe, in District 268 -- Singer or Kwai Ching. They used it as the basis for an adventure hook.
