Different characters in MT vs. Ct?

If you havn't already done so it may be worth visiting www.traveller5.com and looking at the character gen playtest files.
===============================================
I have and enjoyed looking at them. Are these closely related to Mega-Traveller? I have heard that these actually look like Traveller 4 being cleaned up.

The role of "Agent" is pretty nebulous under the rules and seems like "Bureaucrat" with a sexier title...

The T5 playtest files are no closer to MT than they are to CT. They're about 70% T4 and about 30% entirely new. T4 had some innovations to the CT/MT char-gen model that I liked (homeworld skills, officially allowing career-changes, advanced education as an option for all characters) and some that I didn't (too few careers, way too many skill-points). The T5 draft has gone even further afield of the CT/MT model, so much that I don't really even consider it the same game.

The similarities to MT are the greater number and variety of skills offered but you are correct in thinking they are "cleaned up" T4, although if you look closely the last three careers (scholar,functionary and citizen) their details are identical. Entertainer is from T4.
The T4 description of Agents is that they include law enforcers, journalists/reporters and bounty hunters. Notice also that Agents and Rogues can serve terms in other careers, undercover or whatever.
All that aside I agree with T.Foster that MT character generation is a big improvement on CT and is easily ported across.

MT had homeworld skills and I think a lot of folks let you take a second career (I recall an old Dragon or White Dwarf article that provided some guidelines and some things were easier to get into as you got older than others....).

I found biggest problem in CT/MT was the 'skill limit' of int + edu. I rate myself (no, not modestly) at about 9 or A int and about A or B edu and there is no way I can come close to matching my real world skillset in 21 skill levels, not even close.

So, in the spirit of TU customization, I just ignored that rule and the world hasn't seemed to crash to a halt. In fact, most of the PCs have a wide variety of skills, but I think the highest skill levels tend to be about 3, with 1 being the predominant value.

Guys,

While I welcome discussion on the merits of the T5 draft, can we do that in the T5 forum? It's much easier to find it later that way.

Thanks.

If you are interested in checking out the CG system for MT there are a couple of programs floating around the internet that you can download and try out. The old MT computer game (the second one) even had a semi-official CG system in it as well. You can find them at the Freelance Traveller download site.

Hope it helps,

Rob
