DGP 'Early Adventures' worth getting?

Hi--

Having had the opportunity to check out some early Traveller's Digests I'm curious as to what changes were made to the material for 'Early Adventures.' Is it worth picking up?

TIA

I only have The Early Adventures, not the original Digest issues, so maybe I can't really help you, but here's my capsule description of The Early Adventuresnonetheless:

The adventures from the first four issues of The Travellers' Digest reformatted to 8.5 x 11 and MegaTraveller format (for characters, tasks, vehicles, etc.). Plus the subsector maps and Library Data from those issues*, deckplans for ships used in the adventures (the x-boat tender (recycled from Traders and Gunboats) and an original/new 300-ton liner), the Journalist career (in MT format), and equipment descriptions of various-TL recording devices.

The adventures themselves aren't particularly good (in fact, they're really pretty bad), so this book's primary lasting value comes from the Library Data, starmaps, deckplans, and Journalist career. AFAIK this book contains no material (aside from MT-format character and ship profiles) that wasn't in the original Digest issues, so if you already have those I can't see any reason why you'd need this too (especially considering the exorbitant price you'd probably have to pay for it).

*Trivia note: actually, only the Library Data for TD1-3 (covering Deneb and Corridor sectors) is included. The Vland sector Library Data from TD4 didn't resurface until Vilani & Vargr.

I've never seen the originals either, but all of the material in the reprint is in MT format (including the journalist career), so it was obviously updated from the original CT writing to conform to the change in rules.

Hope that helps,

Rob

On a related note, know where I can pickup a copy?

I have many of the Digests, but I don't think I have the one with the Journalist in it (although oddly I think I have a Journalist version done up for Dragon Magazine or White Dwarf way back....). Anyone clue me in as to which Digest the Journalist may have come from? I feel kinda silly buying the whole Early Adventures (esp at "collectible" pricing) just for two or three pages.....

According to this page at the Traveller Bibliography, DGP's version of the Journalist career originally appeared in TD #2. There was also a (different) Journalist career in Challenge #29 or 30, but I like the DGP version better.

Edited to add: If anybody REALLY wants a copy of The Early Adventures, I just noticed that Titan Games currently has a copy for sale at the low low price of, umm, $76...

Perhaps a little more realistically, Noble Knight Games has copies for $25 and $30. Still an awful lot to pay if you only need 2-3pp, but if you don't have the original issues this might be worthwhile ('cause this ain't getting reprinted anytime soon :( ).

Yikes! Expensive-ville....

I must have the one from Challenge, since I don't think I have TD#2 (many of the others, but not that early, I don't believe). I'll just have to make do or write my own (easily done!).

I bought a copy of 'Early Adevntures' when it came out; it IS NOT worth $15 let alone $76! The adventures are marginal at best and the supplimentary information isn't much better. IMO, if you want the Journalist career info, make it up.

YMMV of course.
