Determination

Kpeterson

SOC-10
I was browsing through my MT books last night trying to find more information on the Determination characteristic. I can't quite locate its influence during task resolution.

The characteristic is basically INT+EDU, and is used when a character wants to attempt something they previously failed at. (To be resolute and focused enough to try again). But, I can't seem to find what the DM modifier would be.

Is Determination counted as an attribute during task resolution? 1/5th of its value applied as a DM? Or, is there some other ratio used?

Determination is used when a task attempt fails, see page 14 of the Referee's Manual.

It is defined on page 30 of the Players' Manual as
Intelligence + Endurance

I've always divided this total by 5 to get the modifier for the task since they are characteristics rather than skills.

Hope this helps.

Basically, Determination/5 is the mod for determination tests.

I use /3, since I use att/3 for att tests, and raise all tn's by 1,, but that's a digrssion.

It serves two purposes:
one: It determines how many times you can try again after failing. 1st retry is easy Det (3+ on 2d+(Det/5)), 2d retry is 7+, 3rd is 11+, etc.

two: you can use it to represent the "Grit your teeth and bear on" situations, in which case I'd reccomend Det/10 + relevant skill, or Det/5 if no skill would be relevant.

That's what I thought, but I couldn't find it defined anywhere within the Player's or GM's book.

A digression, but still worthwhile.

That's how I intend on running MT the next time I get a chance.

I'd probably keep Determination on the same ratio and give those gritty situations a higher TN. Seems like situations that call for "intestinal fortitude" should be "Difficult" situations most of the time, and "Formidable" situations a small part of the time.

Well, it all depends upon if you consider an asset of 1+ sufficient to succeed at all simple tasks, and 5+ for all routine tasks..

I can see a great many times and places for routine det checks to go on... crossign a clear-floored bridge, riding in an open elevator, going into a scout bar in marine uniform.
Most of the time, I think an asset of 3+ is sufficient to innore easy tasks.
