Designators and Projectors

What is the difference? It would seem, at least using current military parlance, that a designator is a form of sighting apperatus for another weapon or weapon system. Yet, Traveller has the designator inflicting damage.

Laser designators in GunMaker are apparently quite powerful :) Marc commented on this as well, but he didn't change things. Maybe that would make a good errata item?

EVEN BETTER - perhaps a suggestion for descriptive text for Designators: they're "dialable" to where they range from "mere" designators to actual weapons.

Careful- you're applying common sense there, it may bite you...

This is a pretty straightforward explanation though, and resolves the issue nicely.

Occams razor.

From the text accompanying the picture:

The tech level 8 laser carbine (page 43) is used as a range finder and target designator, as well as a personal weapon in an emergency.

So it is already canon and has been since 1978.

That's a good point.

To me, though, it would seem that just using the carbine should do the trick. Why have a separate designator category? Although laser designators do appear to be rather bulky, so maybe they fill a different niche.

Items that were specifically designators could be handy, but why use a separate laser designator when a weapon can be dialled down to be used as one?

Too, at higher TLs they'd use better alternatives than trying to paint the target with a laser: visual sighting handoff, or some other system that identified the target in an area and tracks it prior to an attack. Inertial, or higher-platform driven, take your pick.

I noticed the laser designator and assumed that it was a round-about way of indicating that it was a laser rifle/carbine performing, "other duties as assigned" while still maintaining the "builder" format. I suppose other forms of designators would suit aliens with different primary senses while others would be the equivalent of police "non-lethal" riot guns like stink-guns, pepper guns and dye markers; although these could easily fall into the projector class also.

Where I have trouble with it is, as I said, a designator, to me, is a form of sight while a projector, like a "heat" or flame-projector is a weapon.
