Given the canonical humaniti, Vilani, Zhodani, Solomani and so forth I'll vote for "Shionti".

What they call themselves might something else entirely. For instance, Mexicans call themselves "Americans" while the rest of the world uses that term to refer to people from the United States.

Yeah, but then there's Answerin, Geonee, Suerrat ... And come to think of it, the Vilani name for themselves is Bilanidin. Also, canonically -- isn't someone actually from Terra still called a "Terran?"

But going back to the original question: how about "Shiner?" Or does that just sound too much like an epithet?

I also vote for Belter. AFAIK the population of that system are not natives.
"Belonging to a particular place by birth". The population isn't native, but the members of the population are. Just as everyone born in America are native Americans -- just not necessarily Native Americans.

Calling someone from Shionthy a 'Shionthy Belter' would be like calling me a 'Denmark Zealander'. I live on the island of Zealand, true enough, but people from Denmark are called Danes.

Who says everybody in the Shionthy System lives in the Shionthy Belt? BtC mentions a lot of gas giant moons. Granted, BtC claims everybody lives on the moons, which obviously can't be true (since the majority of the population must live in the belt), but some lesser fraction of the population can live on them.

I'd go with Shion- which suggests some sort of strange local grammar, which may not be appropriate at all, but anyway ;)

Well I was thinking of a quick here come the shits a shortening of the word but that might not be universal. Voted for Shionterit sounded most pleasing to me.

You beat me to it. I think the only people there are investigating all the antimatter in the system. It's interdicted because of that.
According to the UWP, Shionthy has a population of 70 million and is governed by a representative democracy. Doesn't really sound like a scientific outpost.

And, indeed, Beltstrike informs us:
"Before interdiction, Shionthy had already acquired a population of belters collecting anti-matter fragments, worth several million credits per gram. Imperial law allows established populations to remain in a system after interdiction, and despite periodic disasters, the population has grown to an estimated 70 million. The inhabitants sell their finds to the Imperium, which, despite the humanitarian concerns which led to interdiction, finds the present arrangement too valuable to abandon."
