CT Pure Basic PBeM?

Okay, all you old-timers out there... interested in a Classic Traveller PBeM game using Books 1 thru 3 only?

This is a project I've been considering for a while now. Sort of a "remember when.." type thing. Remember what playing Traveller was like in the REAL early days?

This campaign would be set in a randomly generated subsector. It would NOT be set in the canon universe. The canon universe hadn't been introduced yet when Books 1-3 came out.

This could be quite interesting. If anyone is interested, let me know. I'm gonna start working on it as a solo project, but if I get any response, I'll turn it into a PBeM.

I'm definitely up for it. To be honest, all I've played is the Classic 3 book, although I've recently been filling out my Classic connection.

Okay.. I dunno what's different about the Traveller book, but I'm sure it'll do.
Just stick to the basics.

Here's what I'm thinking so far. The core rules for Traveller tend to display the future as a kind of 18th century in space. The communications lag, the nobles, the emphasis on edged weapons, the book 2 starship designs (number of turrets based on ship size, similar to the number of cannon on sailing ships being based on hull size), etc. So the background I'm thinking of is along those lines. Their will be a few major powers ('major' in this game being subsector sized nations) with large non-aligned areas between them. More details will come soon.

As far as campaign goals, it'll mostly be open ended. As I'm sure you recall, scenarios and campaigns in the early days were very loose and not closely structured like most rpg scenarios are nowadays. The emphasis was on playing the game, rather than acting out a scripted story. This game will be like that. Your characters can pretty much do whatever they want to. How the story unfolds will be based on their actions, not on a pre-determined storyline. This may lead to great adventures or it could also lead to dead-end ones, but either way it should be a fun journey.

I'm trying to decide exactly how to run this game; either true pbem, on a message board like Yahoo Groups, or on a dedicated rpg board like RolePlay Online or PlayByWeb. I'd love to hear any suggestions you may have.

As a CT/LBB purist, I would love any opportunity to play a little PBeM! Please include me if there is room. Thanks!

Count mein as well, I am running in Baron Sarthurians T20 Pirate campaign now but a good old CT black book game would be fun. For those who might be wondering "The Traveller Book" which I would be using is Books 1-3 with some of the errors fixed, plus some campaign idea seeds, but ruleswise it is straight Book 1-3 rules.

Let me second a vote for Joel's board, as I've hosted two games there. It doesn't have the odious privacy issues I find with the commercial boards and Joel is a willing host.

Also, I'd like to throw my hat in the ring. I'm not much of a pirate at heart (Scout, Merc, or Merchant at heart... with smatterings of other things like Hunters, etc).

I would, on the one hand, recommend the MT character generation system. The special duty roll made (even if you use simplified CT character gen) a bit more well rounded characters, so you didn't end up with a Marine with one term in, Vacc Suit 0, Cutlass - 1, and Mech - 1. That makes for a tad less than capable space adventurer. ;)

Well, I've decided on RolePlay Online. Mostly beause it has a built-in dice roller. I've used it before too, it's a pretty good site.

Eight of you have expressed an intrest, and I think that's a good starting number, so I'm not gonna accept anymore entries for now. All who are interested, I refer you to;

http://www.rpol.net

Go to the Sci-Fi section, and look for Classic Traveller.

No we don't know anything, at least I don't. Went to checkfor updates this morning and RPOL site says the game was deleted by it's creator, check ed the Yahoo website he had setup for the maps and stuff and that is gone too. Has anyone else heard from Cleon inthe last couple days?

Yeah, there's something funny there, no doubt about it.

It'd be a shame if the game went TU. (and I don't mean Traveller Universe here)

I was looking forward to it. (Heck, I look forward to any Trav...)

If this one doesn't pan out, hop on over to the Imperial Fringe game. We're up to I think 3 PCs and could use some more players I believe.

I've been wondering what's up with the CT game over there myself.

It's disappointing! I don't know if Cleon purged it, or what.

but it was starting to be fun!
