CT ... Necessities

I've seen a few questions come through here from newbies who wanted to know what CT stuff they should buy.

I thought a thread with people's recommendations would be helpful--a place where, all at once, various recommendations on certain CT items (and even some non-CT items if useful to a CT-based game) could be accessed.

What items would you recommend to a CT newbie?

SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT 3: MISSILES

If you're going to use missiles in your game, then this is the set of rules to get.

It's detailed. It's incredible. It's very playable. Marc Miller wrote this Special Supplement, and it is what I would call a necessity for CT space combat.

You can find it in one of the JTAS Classic Traveller reprint volumns.

THE MEGATRAVELLER STARSHIP OPERATOR'S MANUAL

This items was published for use with MT by DGP, and it's a rare find today. But, it's also THE best work about Traveller starships I've ever seen. Every major system on a starship is discussed, complete with schematics.

There are also several useful rules included in it (using the Universal Task Profile -- the task system used in MT, but also very playable with CT) including things like skimming fuel from a gas giant (or othe ways to get fuel), determining relative planetary positions in a star system, overhauling the jump drive, powering up the power plant from a cold start, repairing your ship's sensors, etc.

I consider this book extended detail that compliments information contained in CT Book 2.

If you can find it, absolutely get it. It is worth every cent you will pay for it.

STARTER TRAVELLER

This is a respected set of rules for Traveller that includes a Range Band version of the space combat system presented in Book 2. The Range Band version can be played with or without a hex map or square grid (you can plot movement if you want, but you don't have to, if you prefer not to), and it's so much more user friendly than the vector movement system presented with most rules versions (LBB's, TB, reprints) of Classic Traveller space combat.

I don't know if this is a "definite" buy (because 90% of it is reprinted material from other CT rule books), but IMO, the range band version of starship combat make worth the price alone.

Starter Traveller comes with a very useful book of tables and charts (like a GM's screen, but more pages), putting most of the CT things you need to look up right at your finger tips.

Highly recommended.

TRAVELLER'S AIDE #1 - PERSONAL WEAPONS OF CHARTERED SPACE

You can buy and download a pdf version of this book right here on this web site.

This book was created for use with T20, but CT rules are included as well.

I include this book on a "CT Necessities" list because...YOU GET A BUTT-LOAD MORE WEAPONS FOR YOUR CT GAME!

The book is only $5. And, you get complete stats, tables, charts on several weapons (it will more than double the weapons found in Book 1) for your game.

CT really never had a book of weapons. There is Book 1, and there is Book 4....and now there's TA1.

THE MEGATRAVELLER WORLD BUILDER'S HANDBOOK

This is another rare book published by DGP for MT, but I personally think this book is indepensible for CT as well.

The book is about creating worlds for your players. You can create any aspect of a world (temperature chart, world map, local gravity, populace's tendency towards xenophobia, planetary defenses, atmosphere type...the list goes on) and detail it, helping you create a real, living, breathing universe for your players to romp around in.

Plus, there's illustrated equipment pages, rules for using personal-scale sensors, and notes about the Scouts and how they survey planets.

Absolutely get this book if you can find it. It's a GM's (wet) dream.

I consider it the more detailed version of Book 6.

THE TRAVELLER ADVENTURE

Probably the biggest, most detailed adventure campaign (and it is a campaign) ever written for Classic Traveller.

It includes deckpans for the Subsidized Merchant and Vargr character generation.

There's even a Classic Traveller task system hidden in it's pages (many people believe CT had no task system until DGP presented the Universal Task Profile, later adopted by MT).

Marc Miller wrote this one.

It's a definite buy.

Since it is mostly a comilation of DGP's Grand Survey and Grand Census, both of which were for CT, it's perfectly reasonable.

Too bad I can't get a PDF of it... %&^%^&&^ RS....
