CT Box question

SOC-2
Hello!
First post here. I´m gonna referee Classic Traveller for the first time in a long, long while, and came here looking for inspiration (There´s sure a lot to read here!).
I´ve picked up the 77-rules and most of the supplements to start with. One thing made me curious - I´ve got two boxes (but only one set off LBB´s) that looks identical, save that one of them got "$12" printed in the upper right corner of the lid.
I dont remeber this from my old box (sold many years ago). Does anyone know the story behind this?

Yes!
I bought both boxes second hand from the same seller, so they might have been mixed up before I got them.
Both lids seem to fit ok with either box though.

There's nothing written on the upper right corner of my 1st edition box.
On my 2nd edition box, there's 301. The back of the box hasn't the same picture on it as yours.

Mine has the $12 as well and it's probably a 1981 Edition.

For questions like these I usually refer to Wayne's Books but he doesn't shed any light on this particular question:

Yes, I also checked Waynes before I came here.
Do your (probably) 81 box have the same back then?
When I bought my boxes, the rulebooks where in the other box without $12. The $12 box contained some supplements.

I thought they changed the back drawing on the 81 Edition. The box in this youtube Traveller history was I think the 81 edition.

They did.
The '77 has the white back with a white illustration of a soldier on a planet,
The '81 has a black back with a black illustration of a space station.

My 1981 books came in the 1977 box - maybe Games Workshop (the UK licensee) didn't get the 1981 artwork, or still had a lot of the 1977 boxes which they needed to use up?

They might very well have had left over boxes. This was the case for many early RPG:s (some swedish RPG:s and early Chaosium games for certain, and supposedly OD&D as well). Leftover parts were used for the new edition, so you would get "crossover sets" with earlier editions dice for instance.

Heck, I had a car like that. It was one model year but alot of the parts, such as the brakes and rotors were one year prior.
