Crew structure

I'm organizing the command/crew structure of the 2000 ton ship we have in my former, now another GM's, campaign since my character is the ship's captain. I searched the web for some military chart for a ship to help me out but no luck finding any. I see the numbers in the T20 book (they do look similar to previous Traveller versions) but no chart to organize them into a structure. I've seen organization charts in business, and figure the military's might be similar but I really do not know. Any suggestions? (web site, a military chart for an example)

Part of this is solo play, I can play the part of the captain without taking up game time (I also made the deck plans, okay, copied them from DiFrog and modified them to fit) and pointed out the ship as well as as the 4 fighters and the escape pods (large and small).

Thanks,
Glen

Do you have the crew breakdown per department? And what organization does the ship belong to?

I'm working on it, and got a list shown below. I'm trying to figure out all the service crew positions. (and everytime I think of the cook I keep recalling the movie Under Siege  ) How do shifts work on a naval ship?

This is what I have:
Command

Captain (1) - Savra Blacktip
XO (1) - professor ?
Helm (2) - Bart Wingate
Astrogation (2) -
Medical (1) - (Bear's char)
Flight (1) - Bart Wingate
Gunnery (1) -
Comms/Sensors (1) - Sheila Wingate (wife to Bart, newlyweds)
Engineering (2) - Bob, Akira
Security/Troops (1) - Guido

Crew

Command Support (6)
Supply (1) - Julius Dracos (a 200 BC Roman soldier, long story)
Chief Cook (1) -
Comms (1) -
Sensors (1) -
Captain's Aide (1) - (some cute little thing
file_21.gif
)
Robo Green - combat robot, main purpose: guard the Captain
Robo Red - combat robot, main purpose: ship security
Engineering (4) -
Gunnery (12)
Weapons (4) -
Screen: Nuclear Dampers (4) -
Screen: Meson Screen (4) -
Flight (5)
Mynock Fighters (4) -
Pinnace (1) -
Service (4)
Laundry (1) -
Cook (1) -
?
?
Troops (12)
Section Alpha (6) - Sgt Anton Dulac
Section Beta (6) -

Sgt Anton "I'll be on my cot" Dulac is my combat "monster", based on Jayne from Firefly. He's probably going to shoot Guido, the Italian ex-policeman who's being played by a newbie to role-playing (and he's awful). Good thing the Captain in my main character so Anton can get off easily. ;)

The combat robots came about because I got 3 miniatures of these things. Robo-Blue got crushed in a cave-in/volcano episode on a Pacific Isle.

On the ship I served on we had three watches, with 4 hour shifts, under "peacetime" conditions, and two watches, with 6 hour shifts under "wartime" conditions. Some personnel (for example, the Captain, never stand watches but are available whenever they might be needed).

This is what I have:
Command

Captain (1) - Savra Blacktip
XO (1) - professor ?
Helm (2) - Bart Wingate
Astrogation (2) -
Medical (1) - (Bear's char)
Flight (1) - Bart Wingate
Gunnery (1) -
Comms/Sensors (1) - Sheila Wingate (wife to Bart, newlyweds)
Engineering (2) - Bob, Akira
Security/Troops (1) - Guido
"Helm" is normally an enlisted man position on Naval ships (at least in our Navy, might be different elsewhere). OTOH, I would have at least one officer each in charge of sensors and gunnery. Also keep in mind that you need certain minimum personnel for each watch. Presumable minimum for peacetime:
- Officer of the watch
- Sensor operator (better have two)
- Communications operator (might be combined with above)
- Navigator
- Engineer

Regards,

Tobias

My apolgies for getting some mixed up(sheepish grin) Also we left Tionale with nearly 65 personnel. minimum crewload is 32. We stand at 42 aboard, although 9 of them are PW's.

As you can see we have had some casualties since our Q-ship took off in late November. (the minus crew).
The Merc Ftr wing is not normal crew complement, so can be discounted against the 32 normal for this 1kton (up to 3ktons with armed pods/ cargo container pods).

hope this helps...

Oh, we run 3 eight hour shifts aboard. Or 4 six hour ones. Now...things are stretched thin...

Watch structure. A number have been used.
3 Watches, 8 hr each (std navy)
2 Watches, 4 on and 4 off. Also called "watch & watch", used by naval vessels in extended combat.

3 watches, 6 hr each (18 hr day). Used by American submarines

19th Century merchant watch structure
4 on, 4 off, but only a few awake at night, and every one awake in the afternoon to do the ship's work. The 4 PM to 8 PM shift is split in two (4-6 and 6-8, the "dog watches") so there is an odd number of watches so no-one works every night.

As for the command structure, you usually see something like this in military vessels (generalizing from USN, RN, Soviet Navy)

Executive department (XO)
Supply, cooks, clerks, security, anybody else

Deck Department (1st Lieutenant)
Boatswain, seamen,
probably not on spaceships

Operations department (Pilot)
Astrogation, communications, sensors?

Weapons department (Gunnery Officer)
Gunnery, sensors?

Engineering Department (Chief Engineer)
Engineers & tchnicians

Flight Department
Boat/fighter Pilots & technicians

Medical Department (Chief Medical Officer)
Doctors and med techs. A small department would be part of the Executive department
