I just seemed really out of scale with what the players can handle or experience. It's like telling your players "And the system's central star is on the verge of going nova!" I mean, what can they do?

Still, I thought it was worth posting here.

With the star's jump horizon fluctuating wildly, it'll be a Wrath of Khan escape at the end.

Ohh. There is a challenge. With the two stars orbiting at that velocity the safe jump distance changes almost continuously. Even before the merge occurs.
 
As long as we are far enough away from any gamma ray burst upon merge, we should be okay.

I would be more worried about that if I was near it.
