Lemme put it this way... I seriously wrote to the Heinlein Estate suggesting they sue everyone involved in producing that... (*original term deleted*) nightmare... to get Robert's named disassociated from it... and then I wrote to Joe Haldeman, suggesting that he sue them for swiping his Forever War story without proper accreditation!
Honestly, I like both writers (well, I admire Haldeman for his abilities as a craftsman - I don't care so much for the societies he portrays. *Shudder*), but Verhoeven, Neumeier, and the rest should be prevented from ever turning another book into a movie unless they can prove that they have actually read and understood that book. (Yes, I realize this will probably get them completely out of the moviemaking business... which I don't see as much of a loss.)
