General Complete TML Archive (1987-2026) now on the Internet Archive

The Traveller Mailing List archive is complete and available on the Internet Archive.

Traveller mailing list

All 39 years of the TML (1987-2026) have been recovered and preserved across four segments:

- 1987-2002: 186 monthly files, ~195,000 messages, rebuilt into mbox format
- 2002-2006: 47 files, ~46,000 messages
- 2006-2014: Gap filled via a personal archive from a community member
- 2014-2026: ~22,500 messages from individual .eml files

A handful of months from 2003-2004 are permanently lost due to a hosting migration gap, but otherwise this is the full run from the Tektronix era through Simplelists.

This wouldn't have been possible without Bruce Johnson, who preserved and provided the entire 2014-2026 run as individual .eml files, and u/treecatarmsmen142 on Reddit, who came through with a personal archive that filled the 2006-2014 gap that would have otherwise been a dead zone. Huge thanks to both of them.

If you ever posted to the TML, your words are in there.

If anything needs corrections or finds gaps I missed, let me know.

I kinda wish I'd joined this as soon as I got into Traveller, but it wouldn't work with early gmail and then I realized that I'd find it overwhelming.

The TML apparently kinda post dates my initial interest in CT.
Is there a 'simple' answer on what I might find there-in?

If you mean in the archive of the TML (as opposed to on the current TML) then you'll find nearly every debate and every question has been thrashed out in great detail over the nearly 40 years of its existence.

What is the nature of the Imperium? What are Nobles and how do they work? Was it really Strephon killed on Capital by the assassin? Are battleships or battle riders better? Can a 1G drive get you off an Earth-sized world? What is a feudal technocracy? Do thruster plates mean every starship captain has a world-cracking weapon at their disposal? Is there stealth is space? What is the Empress Wave? Why are the Zhodani going to the Core? Etc Etc

Plus lots of ephemera, jokes, gibs, terrible attempts at fiction and the like.

The internet was still newish. And for a lot of us it was the very first time that Traveller players could talk to one another. We used it to ask all of the questions we ever had and debate with each other on our interpretations. It was one long mass of arguments, explanations, justifications, and education. It was where a lot of us got all of our arguments about canon, piracy, and near-c rocks off of our chests. I really don't think there is anything in there that you won't find in the various traveller forums and social media insights today. It is merely a history of the one of the first time these arguments were ever documented.

I loved it so.
