CharGen Flowcharts (alt)

Thanks guys.

Now "Scouts" is up. Had to make some wild ass guesses (like, is it +1 Fame or +4 Fame per discovery?). Also, not sure what to make of the "retry" roll to begin the career.

.

Retry allows you to retry to enter the career if you fail entrance requirement in one years time if the career allows it. This costs a year of no skills but it does allow you to get that career you really want (think ronin students)

as for scout fame
"The Scout discovers
a valuable new world or a valuable feature
on a known world (a Discovery), receives
a Land Grant, and Fame +1." pg 59 T509

And later, page 71, Fame, it is x4. *sigh*

I tend to take the character generation page as more accurate as that was the character sheet was tinkered with between 5.0 and 5.09 but the fame table was copied wholesale.
I also would pick the character generation page as that is what a person generating a character would look at for the information 1st. The fame page is fluff for that.

yes I am justifying a decision I made without realizing that page 71 had such a goof up on it...but I still feel that the decision is the right one.

Revising the flow charts myself. Like I said 1st Draft :)

I was actually struggling to understand chargen myself until I saw your work. Thanks for getting the ball rolling. Two people doing this might seem redundant but I think it's showing up ambiguities in the text. It'll be interesting to functionally contrast our two sets once complete.

.

Nobles and Scholars are done. Plus I've made some minor tweaks (cosmetic AND functional) to all the other careers done so far. Three remain to do.

.

I don't think Scholars are supposed to have CC reduction if there's a failed risk roll (or bravery/caution mods, for that matter)? The "02 Scholar" page doesn't mention those things, and none of the participants used CC reduction or bravery/caution for scholars in Magnus' PbP.

Yes, it's not clear that Scholars work in a physically dangerous environment.

On the other hand, Indiana Jones was an archaeology professor...

Your work is beautiful -
wise decision on your part to split the education up. I built the ultimate all your education needs chart but it is very confusing!

what program are you using to generate the charts and are you willing to share the source files and not just PDFs?

On p56 of T5.09 it does say "Research can be dangerous. Reduce CC by negative Mods and Flux -" which looks like it's NOT a cut-n-paste error from another career. I'm guessing this covers both field work type risks (robject mentioned Indiana Jones) and "mad scientist in lab" type work (Brundle-Fly springs to mind).

Just quickly off the top of my head, if I were to house rule this, I might clone this career to make a more librarian type ... no risk roll but no mods on the reward roll either.

Thanks. I'm using MS Visio 2016. I guess I could make the 'source files' available ... though from the last round of tweaks I made, I think I want to wait until I've finished the initial work.

Right now I'm not happy with how I'm handling waivers (on Scholars it made it untidy). Actually, the whole promotion and tenure section of Scholars looks clumsy to me.

or just forgo the risk reward take the minimum to make it a safe roll - practically impossible to fail but also no reward

2d < CC is risk roll
pg 45 says you can select cautious to bravery mods

Cautious +1 to +9
Bravery -1 to -9

if your a scholar your CCs are C1, C2, C3, C4
C4 should be High so on that round select maybe select some risk but the others always select cautious if you stat is 6 select Cautious +6... you literally can not fail at that point. -6 to reward but you played it cautious and hung out in the library.

The RR Loop for scholar does not kill you like some of the loops can.
otoh one of the rewards for risk in scholar is "Award Winning Scholar" which also grants "TAS Life Membership" (pg47, 48) which in many cases is worth the risk

also... risk reward rolls can be Waivered! (if you fail!):

(t509 pg56)
"Waivers. An adverse die roll or decision (in Research, Publication, Promotion, Tenure, or Continue) may be waived. Check
Soc (2D); Mod minus previous waivers (successful or not)."

the only one of the risk reward cycles that allows you to avoid failing with waivers - :smirk:your loyal grad student I guess jumped in to push you out of the way of the truck and was injured in your stead due to his loyalty to family and rank.

waivers makes everything untidy...

All careers are now done and uploaded. (The final ones were Craftsman, Entertainer, and Functionary.) Plus another round of minor cosmetic tweaks all around for consistency. Again I've had to make choices to resolve contradictions and uncertainty in the text (this is my best guess as to what the rules were intending to say) but feel free to disagree.

Enjoy.

ERRATA.

On the BA Chart the N/OTC choices are at the very end and they need to go next to Freshman Year as that is when the choice is made. You attend N/OTC at the same time as you attend regular college or university. Officer Training is concurrent, not consecutive. :coffeesip:

Otherwise, I am digging them, very clean, simple easy to read. Rock on.

Will be downloading and giving them a once over later since I need to do some CharGen soon.

Bumping this thread as these are great tools :) and we have people asking about character generation again.

also think that the Life Pursuits and Experience needs one of these!

Actually trying something new...
Flowgorithm Programming language appears particularly suited to converting this to an automatic character generator. Have the dice generator created already and several functions for things like waivers written already.:coffeegulp:
it is self documenting like our flowcharts but actually runs like a program.:coffeesip:

Coolness.

Let us know when it is a more complete and running form, because I can't speak for everyone else but I sure would like to see this.

EDIT: Also, Doctor Rashid is gonna be happy his Waivers are already in. Way back in Beta he kinda lost a couple, so this is a subject near and dear to my players, or one of them.

quickly (and I mean stupidly fast) this language slows to a crawl and then just slows.... Going to try again but in a more traditional language. Wished this had worked as it is very self documenting! (otoh String and screen control is basically none existent
