I know there is another thread that seems to be the same as this but I had to post another because this is the title of a fantastic sci-fi one hit wonder book by John Faucette in 1971. To my knowlege John Faucette has no other published books.
The book is totally "Space Opera" and describes the defense of Earth by the brillant tactician Dane Barclay. It is a hopless battle described in graphic detail much like the siege of Jerusalem (by the Romans under Titus) or Masada but with fantastic sci-fi starships and weaponry.
If you like such stuff and want a pure war book with no silly romance I recommend (if you can find a copy!!)
Also I wanted to point out a wargame based on a hex map with counter units which was developed by Kerry Anderson to represent the planetary assault of one of the planets of Barnard's Star. Kerry's game is in PDF format and can be found at: http://www.grognard.com/board.html#g2
Good review at www.boardgamegeek.com and of course web grognard's.
