Big rigs go high tech

A intresting article, but the author does'nt seem to realise that said technology makes a automated, driverless Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) a very real possibility....

They have been a goal of California's DoT for years, G.

Driverless vehicles' big issues at present are mostly the infrastructure costs of putting road tell-tales down, and weather. Oh, and the liability and job rights lawsuit potentials.

It may be a possibility, but I doubt too many people would be comfortable with what is basically a 40 ton ballistic missile (especially if it's HazMat) without a driver rolling down the road with them. On the other hand, I've met a few drivers that this could easily replace and be better than. Some of that stuff is already being used to an extent. I like that GPS - I could have used one of those on a number of occasions.

Hmm, the intrusion aspect worries me:

You didn't check your tyre pressures - you're sacked.
You didn't check your oil pressure - you're sacked.
You almost sideswiped a car - you're sacked.
You tailgated a car - you're sacked.
You were wandering from your lane - you're sacked.
You deviated fom your route - you're sacked.
You carried an unlisted crate - you're sacked.

How do I get my food and beer delivered when all the truck drivers are working as road sweepers?

I don't know of any company would 'sack' you for half of that stuff. Hitting something is a no-no, but 'sacking' you for not checking your tire pressure is extreme.

Not when tires cost a couple hundred apiece and there might be a wait for new tires that size. You ruin several tires you could be fired by a company that owns the rigs.

Never heard of a person be hired just for forgetting to check the air but have heard of a several who were fired for not checking the air which lead to having an accident due to such.

Re: Tyre Pressures
If you're going down the route of remote tyre pressure sensors, in your potentially automated HGV, then surely the inclusion of a centralised, automated tyre inflation system, as used on some military trucks, is surely not far behind as a logical extension of the above...

or Speed Racer's Mach 5 with complete tire replacement ;)

Actually, I think you bring up why this is a good idea. Instead of fairly random sources of bad and good information, you've got all the performance info on all your drivers. The system would tell who the best drivers were, as well as the worst. The employers will probably only sack the worst, and only those who can be replaced by other presumably better drivers, or who are liability bombs. The liability angle will be a function of law level and economy: how many trucks can the company afford to have idled to avoid potential liability. That being said, most commerce will be handled by automatics. Anti-robotic concerns could be handled by segregating traffic, independent automatic fail-safes, etc.
