Behind the claw, my two centicredits

Murph

SOC-14 1K
I liked it for the most part. However my small gripes include:

No pull out map. I miss this feature, one with the x-boat routes and borders.

Some descriptions of people and events are too brief, but what the heck you can't cram everything into an affordable book.

Other than that I thought it was pretty decent overall.

Would definately have preferred if borders had been included on the maps, though. I had no idea how badly the Sword Worlds had been whacked in the Fifth Frontier War until I started working on maps of my own.

I admire anyone who puts in the level of effort it takes to detail several hundred worlds, however some of the entries were less than well thought out. For example: Kinorb/Regina sits on the Imperial/Vargr border yet the government there is advertising the planet as a place for the rich to retire. This is the same planet which has been a doormat for invasion five times. I'm not saying there are ways to explain things, but this was too big a stretch for me.

Hope springs eternal?

I've seen governments do a lot stranger/sillier things (Please come and retire here with your riches. Invasions? Well yes, but the Imperial Navy got it beat now)

Or indeed think of it as a selling point.

"Most retirement communities are more interested in getting you to settle down and lead sedentary lives of quiet desperation. Not so Kinorb estates. While we cannot guarentee that hostilities will break out again there is the distinct possibility. Which would you rather spend your golden years doing knitting booties for all of your ungratefull great-grandchildren or Drilling with the local militia? Retire to exitement at Kinorb estates."

Or something along those lines.

LOL. Yes I can see the world emerging before my eyes. Ranks of silverhaired milita, elite combat "walker" units (Kinorb Zimmerframe Commandoes), unit crests with kniting needles rampant... It may seem illogical, but I think I could run with this one

Glad to have been of service.

Kinorb, the retirement home for old Mercenaries and others who refuse to go quietly into that good night! A sneaky ploy by Kinorb to bolster its defenses against the treacherous Vargr.

Wow, now that you mention it, retirement age commandos give a whole new meaning to the words "dead man switch".

How about adding a new mustering out benefit for retirement age marines and commandoes:

Frontier Villa*

(*Provides luxury villa on Vargr/Zho/K'Kree/Solomani frontier with a well stocked arsenal of low-recoil weapons and a cupboard of combat drugs; further rolls indicate skill in geriatric combat)

But seriously folks, this isn't a bad idea. Considering that most characters retire anywhere from mid-30's to mid-40's, they still have plenty of life left to give any raiding band a good drubbing. Think about it, by attracting retired military to Kinorb they have a good chance to at least build good cadre units at a minimal cost. Very similar to what the Romans with alot of retired Legionares - you stock the frontier with alot of military experiance that usually will help stabalize the area.
Besides, aren't most PC's of this age group when they start to adventure?

This is a great idea! Consider it stolen...

I like the idea of retired mercs and other roughnecks. However, my impression was that BtC was talking about rich business types (which is used to justify the "Rich" trade code).

Artwork was not very good, IMHO. I would have like to seen a more frontier feeling further one got from Regina. Plus, the whole Zhodani/Imperium was mishandled. Here we have to Empires armed to the teeth staring down each other. If anyone has travelled to Cold War Berlin or the DMZ in Korea/Cuba. That is better way to imagine it. Each side fearful of the other, indoctranated that "their" system is superior. Filled with eager trigger happy cadets wanting to serve on the frontier restrained only by the Scout and Diplomatic corps. To get a sense of it read: Ordeal on Eshar, although, that is set in Far Frontiers.
