Astrographic page designations

dcorrin

I have a quandry over the naming conventions for astrographical designations.

The traveller wikia uses (I will use Antares as a base):

*Domain of Antares
*Antares Sector
*Antares Subsector
*Antares (system)
*Antares (world)
*Antares (star)

The ( ) designation works well as we have a fixed naming convention, and the | in references e.g. [[Antares (world)|]] shows as Antares. Making links a bit easier to type.

For this wiki I was going to suggest the following:

*Antares/domain
*Antares/sector
*Antares/subsector
*Antares/system
*Antares/world
*Antares/star

In this case the entry ''Antares'' would be a disambiguation page, and the / only used when there was more than one, thus the entry for the world Efate, would simply be Efate (not Efate/world). This makes the 90+% entries which are not multiple simple. Also each of the sub-pages will have a < reference back to the main page. The | reference trick does not work e.g. [[Antares/world|]] and of more concern the page does not have a definitive name. Thus if one is writing about the world foobar, one would have to know if it is foobar or foobar/world and if the former and another entry is made at a later time all the references would need to be updated.

What is people's opinion?

So, the idea is to use Name/Level for each entry. But, if it only exists at one level, it would just be Name? Later, if another entry comes up, we "move" the old entry to the appropriate Name/Level, and create a new disambiguation page at Name?

Sounds simple enough to me.

That is it, with some redirection pages put in as well. This makes things a bit more complicated for the few names which are large in scope, but simpler for the vast majority.

Another idea would be to use your namespaces the other way around:
* Domains/Antares
* Sectors/Antares
* Subsectors/Antares
* Systems/Antares
* Stars/Antares
* Planets/Antares

All linked to from a disambiguation/consolidation page such as:
* Main/Antares

This is about how I organize my own xwiki.

This level of organization is covered by placing everything in categories, so the category page for Domains will have a bit of common description followed by a list of all articles which are part of the domain system.
Thanks for the idea.

Hello Dan

are we considering migrating some (or possibly most) of the data form the wiki we have worked on for the last years or so?

should we maybe rename the worlds/sectors/ subsectors in accordance with the discussion above?

Maybe some. There is a long discussion of the differences in the Wiki licencing in this thread. Short answer, anything in official canon may be copied over, but everything else needs official permission of the original author (again) to post.

Also the Imperial Encyclopedia can host game rule information, something we can't do in the Traveller Wiki.

Most of the sector and subsector stuff can be copied over, and yes they should use this new format assuming that we are in agreement to this structure. I have had not much feedback on this structure...

Wiki "translations"

.....anything in official canon may be copied over, but everything else needs official permission of the original author (again) to post. .....

Have you had any contact with those authors, or should I go and try to get those permissions?

or maybe add these topics to the discussions on the wiki?

Template issue resolved

So with the use of the #ifexists parser function, I have been able to create templates for world references. So it will test if say regina/world exists and use that or if not simply use the regina page reference. So it looks like there is no reason not to use the revised page designations.

Ah...

Your problem was that your profile was on the discussion page, instead of the content page, so the link didnt reach your information.

I fixed it.
