Are there computer wargames for Traveller?

redwalker

I know that games like Elite/Galtrader etc. were heavily influenced by Classic Traveller.

Are there any current games for the Traveller I.P.?

If not, I heartily encourage releasing games for the Nintendo DS. I see lots of folks playing NDS.

Thread Number Fifty!

What is the Traveller IP? And I think the Escape Velocity games had a smidge of Traveller in them too.

(and this is the Fiftieth Thread I have a sub to (so far) :D!)

there was only one i know of but it was more RPG than war...

called space/trader I/II for the apple...if you ask marc miller he
might give you the link to it...

he did for me anyway....

i don't have the link anymore but i do have the files
i don't think i can re-distribute them though(just to be safe) sorry....

By I.P. I mean "intellectual property."

And yes, the Escape Velocity games owed a heavy debt to Traveller, although the people who made them were undoubtedly more familiar with Elite/Galtrader or the Apple game.

What I mean is, if Joss Whedon can make Firefly and Serenity, it ought to be possible for a computer game maker to make a Traveller-themed sci-fi game, e.g. for the NDS.

Sci-fi games with a strategic tone, such as Sins of a Solar Empire, seem to sell well enough to keep getting made, but IMHO they don't have much Traveller feel.

I made a computer version of the "Snapshot" wargame.

The game tool program "The War Engine", that you need in order to play the Computer Snapshot version, is now available for free!

Look here:

http://www.matrixgames.com/games/downloads.asp?gid=356

All you have to do is downloading the "War Engine" and the files for "Snapshot"

The Snapshot main files are hosted at this place:

http://www.datafilehost.com/download-9560a5a9.html

The 1.01 update is here:

http://www.datafilehost.com/download-5d99802e.html

You need both files.

Please read the accompanying readme's and docs before installing!

Happy gaming.

P.S. Here is a screenshot from the game in action, Scenario#1, THEY'RE LOOSE!

Dukam!

Raanku! And even, crap!

Who do we have to bribe, extort or whatever other necessary Adventurer stuff to get some Macintosh games, dangnabbit!

And that Snapshot looked neato. :(

If you have an Intel Mac, install 'Crossover'...

it will let you run tons of PC swares.

Don't let being on a Mac get you down - you hold the key to many possibilities when you have a Mac!

FWIW, Homeworld 2 always reminded me of Traveller. The enemy in the game, the "Vayger", even have ships that remind me of Vargr ships, big wide black strips and yellow paint designs and all.

I vaguely recall seeing an alpha version of a game for the atari ST at a user's club meeting once. I don't remember what its working title was, but the programmer said it was essentially a computer version of Striker.

There was also a snapshot type game on the atari ST too.
dman my old age and memory...I can't remember what it was called either even though I played that one alot.

I'm running crossover as well. You will need a valid install of 98/2K/XP/Vista. (Note that the latter two are checked by MS at install!)

I also use darwine for xquartz... many 98/XP programs run fine in it... and it is faster to boot, and doesn't leave windows running.

For either, you up the minimum system ram from 500MB to 1GB.

And for the Old DOS games: DosBox. Even on PPC macs, since the PPC version includes a 286 emulator...

*raises hand*

Umm, let's pretend I am the typical broke-ass gamer and only have a lowly G3 iBook, and thus look lustfully, yet from a great distance at those slim and lovely Intel Machines....grrrrr.

Oh and peeps, I am ....*looks embarrassed * I am a User, not a true Tech Geek, I just play one on the net. *shrugs*

Well, at least you can run Galactic in DosBox.... and most of Sid's stuff, too.

Yup.

It emulates Dos 6.22 and the processor.

Most of Sid's stuff, last I checked, ran in 6.22

Grooovy! *might have to get back to the Bilanidin, need an expression of Joy*

Thanks again folks and My Lord Aramis. Now I have to hunt down a copy...

Anyone won, "They are loose" ?

Usually, the Engineer should stay in the drive room, until the Vargr brings him a gun.
Else he has a tough time with the animals
