Archer-Gemekush-Midland, Food related

parmasson

SOC-14 1K
I read the previous discussions on food in Traveller from a year or so ago.

One thing that strikes me is that the listed Megacorporations do not appear to deal in foodstuffs. To my befuddled mind that suggests three things.
1. The writers overlooked it. (never)
2. Most food/agricultural products are not worth moving because planets can supply themselves with enough food.
3. There is another large organization that does not qualify as a "Megacorp" and goes unmentioned as a result.

I prefer option three because The Nutra-Go Brand Authentic Food Flavored Nutrient Product is available at better starports everywhere and goes wonderfully with my favorite soft drink Hava-cola.

I see a vast food manufacturing and distribution network run by a company called "Omniyumm" or "Archer-Gemekush-Midland Food and Industrial Gasses." Perhaps it is just a subsidiary of Sharurshid?

Any thoughts?

Age about a month, in fresh carboy (the one you just washed since it was empty, and drained into leaving the ice in the first one...), with whatever fruit rhinds are available thrown in for flavor. Package half for self in 0-G fluid tubes, sneak rest to favorite scout bar for the discerning customer... usually for a few small credits from the proprietor.
JarHead! A flighty cocktail of hard liquors, vagely fruity, with a sharp pepper bite, all cut by 50% groat milk. Served chilled, if served by labelling. Marines tend to turn it into instant toddy: have the barkeep run the tray of unopened bottles through the dishwasher immmediately before serving. Label shows a marine holding a jar containing a pickled head with scout service like headgear...

Actually, doesn't that describe all Vilani beer - it's soda...?

I would be really interested in how to do this, as alcohols freezing point and boiling point are both well below water's...

Dude, have you ever tasted jet fuel?! It better have more than 12% alcohol if it wants to have much of a market share.

Great list, Parmasson!

Can't take much credit for it I just slapped it together.

As for space wine . . . it is really quite a simple matter if you have an emergency low berth you don't mind cannibalizing, the little blue part out of an igniter for a Type "B" power plant, an old fuel cell and 6m of copper tubing.

Dude! This list is awesome!

IMTU, food is a major trading commodity and really big business; some worlds have it and a lot of worlds need it. Food manufacturers often own whole worlds. In some regions, prices for some delicacies are such that pirates and smugglers need little incentive to highjack food shipments. Makes for some interesting adventures.

Under liquors you missed...
Hefrian Single malt Scotch, a Glen Moraigne clone from Terra..a bottle;
That years batch[current] 20-25cr.

Slainte!

Sir,
Hefrian Single malt Scotch added thanks!
Are there any more foods?
I have,
An Aslan treat: tuna flavored popsicles
Kippers on a Stick, from some part of Terra I think
Shirnkung Mustard, spicy yogurt culture, local thing

BTW what is the connection between Trader Jim and Coffee Juice?

Respectfully submitted.

Instapak Noodles!

Jut add hot water, wait and eat!
Come in a variety of flavors:

Vilani-shugilii, Sol-Thai, Sol-Chinese, Sol-Japanese, Vegetarian, Sol-Italian,

Sold in packs of 25 individual meals for 2.5cr a package. Light weight, nutritious, and filling.

I'd add MacSwineys from the Stainless Steel Rat series. Their fully automated outlets are found throughout known space and serve such delicacies as Macbunnyburgers, pocuswineburgers and Cherry Oozer drinks. Yum!

There are a handful or Vargr foods that have been adopted by humans IMTU and spread across Known Space as a result.

"Vargr Takeout" is a long standing streetfood IMTU, is basically shish kabobs of spiced and/or marinated meat. "Traditional" or Authentic is highly seared on the outside but very rare on the inside.

There is a similar "high class" version which is essentially sashimi and/or tartare, but served with multiple dipping sauces and eaten on special finger mounted claws that piece the food.

Lastly, there is a Vargr snack which is essentially a very small mouse that is cooked whole by seeping frying them in oil, then eaten whole. Any extremely small rodent will do, even insects actually, the idea being that they are about the size of an adult human thumb. Different oils give different flavors, etc. They are the fast-food equivalent of French fries, onion rings, etc. for Vargr, humans treat them more like chicken nuggets. It's not uncommon to see folks walking around Startown muching on a bag of these.

D.

I would add the following delicacies.

Terran Federation Space Forces Emergency Ration, Extraterrestrial, Type Three
Supercow sandwiches—huge masses of meat and hot relish, wrapped in tortillas of some sort
Superbourbon, made with New Texas superyams
Poictesme melon brandy
Government Issue, Meal, Combat, Individual (12 menus)
Raisin Jack, guaranteed to turn your insides black
Haggis, neeps, and tatties
Skillygalee, recipe furnished upon request
Dandyfunk, recipe furnished upon request

Don't forget Hardtack.

hardtackRecipe.bmp

I have the recipe for 100 pounds of Hardtack, and it basically is flour and water with possibly a bit of salt or sugar. This is from a US Army Subsistence Handbook circa 1910. If salt or sugar was used, the quantity was 3 pounds per 100 pounds of flour.

Hardtack biscuits were about 3 inches by 3 inches and about 1/2 inch thick. They also had 9 to 16 holes punched all the way through them to promote the drying process. See Hardtack and Coffee by Josh Billings, which can be found at archive.org. The ration of hardtack per man per day was either 9 or 10 depending on the supply and the unit.

I have found some data on Japanese paratroop rations in World War 2 that I will have to post. On another thread, I posted the recipe for the World War 2 "D" emergency ration. May have to do that again too.

I have a copy of Hardtack and Coffee.

There is a picture of a hardtack biscuit in there. I have used it in a book that I did. There are some interesting ways to prepare hardtack in Billings' book as well. From talking with Civil War re-enactors, there are a couple of companies that bake hardtack and ship it.

Do you have the Army ration for the Civil War period?

In a museum (I forget which one) they have a crate of hardtack from the Civil War. They tested one and it was still edible.

Don't remember the ration offhand, but I do remember that on the march sometimes they would put a hunk of raw salt pork between two hardtack as a sandwich to eat while marching.
