Is it customary on this site to move things around so much without letting someone know about it?

I also get the feeling of just having a very large "BULL'S EYE" just painted on my back.

I like small ship universes, and I have modified the LBB2 ship construction for a lower TL alternative setting.

For example I swapped the jump fuel requirement for the maneuver drive, so a manoeuvre 2 ship needs 20% fuel for its drive.

I also postulated fission power plants an so removed the fuel requirement altogether.

Lasers are only useful for point defence, the main offensive capability is by means of missiles/robotic sub-craft.

What sort of weaponry do ships use in your game?

It happens, usually when a thread digresses and digresses again, etc. Particularly when the thread is a long one to start with.

McPerth is a pretty good guy. I doubt he intended to spotlight you in a bad way. Just not his style.

As an aside, I've been reading, and enjoying your posts, and the other members feedback. If I may suggest, you do seem a bit tense. Most everybody here is friendly, though, like anywhere, there are exceptions.

Stick around and post. Your ideas are good and you'll see some pretty good "lively discussions" on occasion. Just try to be a bit friendlier than your opposition on any disagreement and you'll see it works out well.

Another piece of advice, you'll never win an argument using "hard science" as everyone has their own pet "hard science"!

Looking over some of the aspects of Silversides' small ship universe TU:

  • I quite like the "No fusion plants below a certain size" idea. It definitely makes vehicles much more interesting and much more deserving of the players' attention. Players in Traveller treat air/rafts like players in D&D treat horses i.e. as perpetual motion machines which can be abandoned, used, "refueled", ignored, purchased, etc. without care.

I like structural issues constraining the size of ships rather than jump drive issues. The trouble with using jump drive as your limiter is that monitors/SDBs can still be monsters. What use is there in limiting starships to 5000dTon, for example, if monitors can still reach 1 million dTons?

The lack of beam weapons should be interesting to read about. While I've used them for various reasons, I've never liked the idea of lasers/PAs with ranges measured in light-seconds. 2300's demotion of lasers/PAs to point defense weapons was a good idea IMVHO. As for spinal mounts, without large ships you're not going to have the room for them aboard
    .
His mention of insurance (and perhaps other) requirements sounds very intriguing. We all know the best to control players in Traveller is to control the money they have, so anything that can routinely separate them from their money is a good thing.

It should be interesting to read about how Silversides as approached the population/budget issues in his TU. Limiting ship sizes to, for example, 5000dTons doesn't really work when a world is big/rich enough to build 5000 of them. David Drake has dealt with this problem in his Lt. Leary series in one fashion and it will be interesting to read about another approach.

Of course it will be interesting to read about anyone's SSU. That means you too Ishmael. I read your post with relish and would very much like to read more.

No, I think that I will go back to checking every couple of days, and avoiding any posts giving an opinion. Stay with strictly information, if I think of anything that would be useful.

Last post by me here. I have no desire to be a target.

My apologies, I forgot that moderators are GODS, and deserve worship and groveling obedience.
That's true (if waaaaaay overstated) on any forum, silversides. And, if you really want to pick a fight, it's a bad idea to pick one with giants if you're not really good with a slingshot. McPerth is nominally even mellower than me when it comes to MODing, though he has a neat-and-orderly streak a little stronger than mine. There's really no reason to get hostile with us at all.

Well, that's your call. I hope you enjoy reading what others post.

When a thread derivates too much off topic and the derive may be interesting enough, it can be splited to its own thread, and, in this case, interest was raised about YTU and that way people don't need to endure the topic of the other thread to find what you explained about it.

About not telling anyone, I think I told everyone in my quoted post.

I also get the feeling of just having a very large "BULL'S EYE" just painted on my back.

I don't think so, but, as you tell me you don't want to be targeted, I changed the name of the thread so that your name des not appear on it.

I appologize for that, as I see you don't like that. If you think of a more appropiate name for the thread, please, tell us and any of the mods will sure be glad to change it.

Thank you for changing the title of the thread.

Silversides's universe was interesting (though I like my air/rafts!); I was hoping to hear more of it.

What happened to him, though? I saw him here last night and now he's banned!

He was definitely quirky, but I'd hoped we could coax more out of him.

Sock puppet maybe? I know another poster wrote that they'd thought they'd "recognized" him. Anyway, it's probably best not dwell on the issue.

He was interesting but touchy. So I suppose question asked and answered.

I think it it pretty easy to tell who he really was. Argument by "proxy" is what it came down to.

That was a real shame too, as I was very much enjoying his TU and the responses to his posts. Hopefully he'll be back and we can all enjoy the revitalization of the topic.

It is my policy not to discuss publicly bannings as a general rule.

You know, for someone who said he was out of here timerover seems to be here lurking at least once a day...

When I clicked on his profile after he left...I was surprised to see he was here a few hours earlier...since then I check each day and sure enough...he was here sometime that day...

Strange behavior considering all the rhetoric on his "I'm Outta Here" speech.

Maybe I missed this part, but what was he going to be using for turret weapons...mini missiles? I like my Plasma energy weapons regardless what.

I like the idea of using smaller vessels, that does set a much more playable mode for players.

Banned accounts can still read all the open areas of the board.

I think the point is (and it's how I read/understand it) that most of us interpret "leaving" a forum as (at least) refraining from logging in every day. Not picking on timerover (all that needs be said was in the now locked thread), just indicating that I understood selunatic differently.
