Alternate Universes

I did - in order to use characters that a friend and I had run in a convention Traveller tournament game. It was the late-1980s one where the PCs board a station "orbiting"* a black hole - our two characters were picked to guard the PC's scout ship after the first encounter with the "invisible" aliens. When the rest of the PCs tried to retake the engine room, someone threw a grenade... which damaged the controls, shutting off the M-drives that kept it out of the BH - we tried to get the scout fired up, but neither was a pilot so we failed, and went into the black hole with the station - game over!

We decided that, since the scenario had the aliens come out of a wormhole in the black hole, our two PCs could survive a trip through, and rolled them up as fully-fledged CT characters.

As I was running the game, I decided that the PCs came from a parallel universe where the collapse of the 2nd Imperium included a Vilani military commander taking a fleet to Sol and destroying Terra. As he had made his intentions well-known in advance, there was some degree of evacuation, and recordings of the event went with them**. My PC came from a world settled by one evacuation flotilla, which didn't regain contact with other systems until centuries later. My PC had been a police officer assigned to escort the "aliens" (Free Traders exploring for new trade routes), and they smuggled her aboard just before departure. My friend's PC was engineer on that ship, and we eventually ended up with the Merc group sent to investigate the loss of communication with the BH research station.

The trip through the wormhole trashed the scout, and only their having been closed-up in their work Vacc-suits (hard suits) and their ship having exited from the wormhole right next to a working ship (owned/piloted by the third player's PC) ensbled them to survive.

My PC turned into a terrorist (freedom fighter) when she learned that they were in an alternate universe where Terra was still intact - but was a captive planet under the rule of the Vilani! She vowed to see Terra free, or die in the attempt - and felt that the Solomani Confederation was useless, since they were "doing nothing to free Mankind's Home"!

* It was actually closer than a naturally-stable orbit, it was using M-drives to keep it at a steady distance, they were running at half-power.

** Every citizen of her world were given, when they became adults, a medallion with the inscription "Never Forget" - and containing a data chip with a recording of the destruction.

While not strictly "parallel" or "other universes" territory, to me this video can help Referees who are so inclined to run adventures for their players, and perhaps offer a way to get from one universe to another. The second video explains the operative principles behind the first, so I included the link as well. Really cool stuff.

I may have, in point and fact, probably spilled a good plot device for a future publication, but somebody has either already included this idea in an already published adventure, or will soon. And since Traveller is a kind of DIY RPG with a fairly cool and grounded setting, I thought this might add some texture.

Either way I really thought this video was cool, and even in a non gaming sense, may prove to be a work around for intersteller or even shorter interplanetary travel ... possibly an alternative or augmentation to jump drive; i.e. head to Bernard's star and take a "W" until you hit Proxima.

Traveller -> D&D

We had one session that misjumped into D&D basically. The ref wanted to play D&D but with the same characters.

I had a gung-ho marine. We pop out of jump and are immediately attacked by a dragon. Having full battle dress & grav belt, I was flying all over. We managed to kill each other, and some goddess (this was 30+ years ago so I can't recall which one) brought me back as a fighter with wings as I was flying before and acted so heroically. Which was interesting as normally I play the quiet Scout in Traveller or the quiet monk in D&D. I felt a change in pace would be good I suppose. But I do like flying characters - had a winged polar bear in Gamma World if I recall.

So I imagine that was an alternative universe accessed via jump technology.

I am also allowing for things to "drift in" from other dimensions and universes. Basically, be careful what you wish for, you might just get it or have it happen.

Didn't happen in Traveller, but back in AD&D days, a player later nicknamed "Mass Destruction" made a crack about trolls invading the local barony--it happened--then he said that they missed a spot--so they came back to do it properly. . . .

The other players got rather pissed off, IIRC.
