All Things Vargr

Vargr: Military Organization

V. One concept, that I sort of had at the back of my mind, is Vargr technical and commercial guilds.

W. I'd hesitate to throw them in with packs, as they would be more associations, trying to maintain technical knowledge.

X. I kinda suspect that Freemasons would appeal to the Vargrs' love of mysticism.

Y. Certification that the work and/or products that a recognized member will deliver would meet minimum standards.

Z. Not, necessarily, that they will.

Vargr: Military Organization

1. The competitive nature of Vargr society requires skilled arbitrators to settle disputes and negotiate deals.

2. Emissaries are most often employed by governments, corporations and merchants.

3. Arbitration being the operative term.

4. Glancing through their skill tables, rather non combative.

5. So you don't shoot first, and ask for identification afterwards, likely would need some way to announce their status.

6. Tied to an organization, or free lancers.

7. Could actually be the head of a mercenary organization.

8. Since the point would be gaining the most lucrative contracts, and persuading dog soldiers to fulfill the terms.

9. Since, you could hire a staff that does the actual planning and operational aspect.

Vargr: Military Organization

A. The thing about being attached to an organization, and negotiating with another organization, would make that more of an advocate.

B. The form of advocation would appear to include commercial negotiation.

C. If the dispute in internally with the organization, then the emissary is acting as canine resources manager.

D. In fact, smart pack leaders should seduce emissaries, marry them, and use them as the velvet glove over his steel gauntlet.

E. It should add a couple of points when dealing with his pack.

F. At a minimum, she can handle the cubs.

Vargr: Military Organization

G. Actual arbitration would require a neutral third party.

H. Applying to a third party for such, risks any settlement somehow benefiting the third party organization.

I. Usually, arbitration is seen to have a better outcome for the litigious parties, than fighting it out.

J. Either losing less, or winning more, than can be arrived at through armed conflict.

K. There is a special venue where arbitration can take place.

WE HAVE THE MEETS®️

Vargr: Military Organization

L. How do you enforce arbitration in the Vargr context?

M. Internally, peer pressure.

N. Between two organizations, packs or otherwise, you'd need the State.

O. Or peer organizations, exerting pressure.

P. And then, you get negotiations between Vargr polities.

Q. One popular form of arbitration could be trial by combat.

R. It could be a rather fast way to gain, or lose charisma.

S. Of course, there would have to be some form of innate fairness between the capabilities of the two combatants, otherwise it wouldn't be charismatic in outcome.

T. Except, if the underdog gave a good performance.

U. And through dogged persistence, wins over the crowd.

D. In fact, smart pack leaders should seduce emissaries, marry them, and use them as the velvet glove over his steel gauntlet.
F. At a minimum, she can handle the cubs.
If the Emissary is male...
D. In fact, smart pack leaders should seduce emissaries, marry them, and use them as the velvet glove over her or their steel gauntlet.
F. At a minimum, he or they can handle the cubs.
I felt this should be addressed as Vargr males & females are pretty much equal. I did like the humorous juxtaposition between D. & F.

If this were an Aslan or similar thread, the original F. would make more sense.

Italicized words are my changes.

Vargr: Military Organization

V. I'm not too sure you could term it duelling.

W. Undoubtedly, primitive Vargr had resolved issues before, by fighting until the loser yielded.

X. Or, had it's throat ripped out.

Y. Our concept of duelling might have been duplicated when fairness demanded that both sides had a somewhat similar chance of a favourable outcome.

Z. Introducing one shot pistols, and long blades.

Increased dexterity would make anything balancing more likely, so surfing and rollerskating is possible development.

Vargr don't have much strength or endurance, so a bicycle seems an attractive option; though I doubt there would be much Touring, France or otherwise.

Vargr: Military Organization

1. Spacecraft and starship complements, would, in theory, be smaller than pack size.

2. Assuming, the (vast) majority of Vargr spacecraft and starships are below a kilotonne.

3. Captain, pilot, astrogator, mechanic; singular.

4. Gunner, engineer, steward, sensor operator, security; variable.

5. Spacecraft are going to be surprisingly expensive, or, as cheap as possible.

6. The preference is for streamlining, since once stopped, the Vargr prefer to go to ground.

7. Also, usually easier to hide the spacecraft, than leaving it parked in orbit.

8. And, if not hide, than easier to establish a security perimeter around it.

9. And security guards, is likely where numbers are made up for pack size.

Vargr: Military Organization

A. Mercenaries would be an external pack hired to provide armed muscle, so to speak, for the hiring pack.

B. Lone wolves in Vargr society, would be viewed for a great deal of distrust.

C. Including financial.

D. A Vargr pack, would be rather desperate to have to hire a loner to as a yohimbo.

E. Being a loner would be rather exceptional, since you would assume that the Vargr instinct would be to congregate.

F. Or, get adopted.

G. An Entourage is a pack that caters to the needs, and whims, of the pack leader.

H. The pack leader is the face of the Entourage.

I. There might be an actual pack leader that actually calls the shots, behind the scenes.

J. This might have happened due to an internal coup, or might have been organized with the establishment of the Entourage.

K. An example could be a famous media influencer, or the evolution of a Posse.

Vargr: Military Organization

L. Single pawed spacing.

M. Done without help from others, or, literally, with one paw.

N. In the spacing community, the term packed (or sometimes, fully packed) is used to mean spacing with a crew of more than one, in order to distinguish solo spacers.

O. Definition more clearly spelled out for sporting events.

P. Since Vargr are rather fond of a space race.

Increased dexterity would make anything balancing more likely, so surfing and rollerskating is possible development.

Vargr don't have much strength or endurance, so a bicycle seems an attractive option; though I doubt there would be much Touring, France or otherwise.
Don't know if it's been brought up, but do Vargr ground vehicles have windshields? I think they'd go with goggles and wind in their muzzles.
