Can't remember if this has been discussed before - at least the forum search didn't find any mention of "aerospike".
As an alternative to the scramjet/rocket engine hybrid for an SSTO Reusable Launch Vehicle discussed in another thread, see the linear aerospike engine under development for the X-33.
