Adventures

Daddicus

SOC-13
T5 needs adventures. I'm creating one, but I'm not so good at creation as I am at facilitating an existing story. And one won't cut it

How can we get more adventures? If the game is to gain a following again, it's going to need something. And, waiting for published adventures will simply take too long.

Could we build an online set of adventure material?

* story ideas
* background settings
* adventure snippets
* ways to modify older adventures so they fit with T5's specs

I would like having published adventures, but I just don't think we have the muscle to get enough of them into the wild. Any other ideas?

Writing New Adventures

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1. Write out a patron encounter and post it in a new thread with the encounter's title.
2. Flesh out a patron encounter from #1 with critical details and post it there.
3. I'll create a "Pre-Gen Crew" thread. Gen up some crew members and build up a crew, posting them there.

LONG-WINDED EXPLANATION

Some of us are good at coming up with plot ideas.
Some of us are good at graphics.
Some of us are world-builders or system-users.

These three aspects combine to build short, usable adventures.

Look at the Double Adventures and copy their structure. Some of them were results of game convention games. To write an adventure like that, think about what a convention game is like. They're typically one-shot, playable in four hours if need be. They're focused on one location on one world (or one ship, or one space station). And they're focused in mission. They have critical details worked out (a deckplan, a map, or an encounter), but leave many things to the referee.

In short, they are filled-out versions of Patron Encounters.

Adapting Old Adventures

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Post the changes on a new thread with the adventure's title.

DETAIL

I think adapting the old Classic adventures to T5 shouldn't be hard at all -- in fact it seems to me that changes would be few and far between. Even the use of CT tables (e.g. animal encounters) works fine with T5: just use what's already there, remembering that MOARN is your friend.

The more I think about "converting" the old Classic Traveller adventures, the more I think this is easily done.

The reason I think so, is because for me, T5 is just Classic with more dice for tasks, and the adventures are rules light, or rules nonexistent.

Okay, CT and a few tweaks. Damage soak. Burden instead of advantageous/disadvantageous mods. But, meh.

Absolutely - this is one of the most elegant parts of T5 - it can use all the old CT adventures so easily :]

How can we get more adventures?

Have the setting clearly defined. Then pick a theme (rotten empire, clash of empires, evil megacorps, whatever) and build a cycle of adventures around the theme. Think TV mini-series for PCs.

can you facilitate an existing situation?

adventure 1) hunting expedition to porozlo. the designated wilderness continent has developed a problem with a predator becoming too dominant, and megan's world is looking for professional hunters to do limited culling.

adventure 2) jump ship recovery. many of the ships marooned on louzy are still functional less their jump drives. an "investor" is looking for someone to smuggle in some jump drive components, install them on a particular ship he has in mind, and get that ship out-of-system. prize money will be substantial.

adventure 3) some moran cage fighting champions are travelling to fornice for the annual matches. they are "rock stars" on both mora and fornice, and need 1) secure transportation and 2) general physical security. in addition given the partisan pressures on both sides may result in efforts at sabotage, betting manipulation, and "psych warfare". groupie control also will be a major issue.

Great starts for patron encounters, which once fleshed out a bit become mini-Adventures (or half of a Double Adventure).

My opinion, for what it's worth.

T5 needs NEW adventures that show off the rules and the setting changes.

Get the Galaxiad out of the door and start writing adventures for that.

I've been writing patron encounters as a way to start thinking about, and interacting with, the Galaxiad time period. They tend to focus on one aspect of a setting, which makes the details easier to manage, and they tend to be flexible when fitted into a setting.

I think those other four threads are a really good start. Most T5 games are going to include at least one old-timer (how else will they find out about the game?) So, recreating the old adventures to T5 specs makes a lot of sense.

Can anybody check with Marc and find out if we need to do anything special regarding copyright? I don't think anybody is interested profiting from the rewrites, but I also don't want to cross any boundaries accidentally.

Another issue is where do we put them. I would think anything we do should be made available either through FFE (CD versions) for sure.

But, do we need some kind of on-line format?

Anything you post on this forum is more or less FFE property. So if you want to post something publicly without publishing it, this is a good place for that.

If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

So what are the parameters of the Galaxiad Imperium? Is there one at all?

What's the spread of technology like in that setting: is it like the 3I with a few of the highest tech worlds supplying the Navy and other central services, or is there a more even spread of higher-tech worlds?

The parameters are still being defined, as is the timeline. It is on the radar, however. Marc has stated that the setting starts at a mature TL 16.

This should be in a separate thread. There probably IS a separate thread already for Galaxiad. Anyone want to resuscitate it?
