A writing challenge

November is National novel writing and I am sending a challenge to all you writers. Lets do it but focus on Traveller Fiction. We can set up blogs here or elsewhere and write away.

Rules are very simple. You can organize your thoughts before November but you cant start writing till then. 2 You have to write something like 57,000 words in November. 3. Grammer is not expect to be perfect the goal is to finish the story that can be edited latter.

Do you win anything? Nope just the knowledge you finished the novel. Traveller also gets tons of books to read.

I thought about having a go at it this month, but my plans are to write this superhero story that is kicking around in my head and just won't leave.

50,000 words in one month?

Let's see... that's like 1,700 words a day. Almost seven pages of text. Each day.

Plus you have to make it interesting, and have a plot.

Formidable.

They dont call it Nation novel in a month cake walk now do they One of the coolest thing about officially joining is the bi daily or so emails of encouragement from writers some famous some not so famous. The last time I tried I got half way done but work and class work caught up with me at the 3/4 of the way.

I have one Traveller setting science fiction novel going and three fantasy stories, but I doubt that I could manage that much every day. November is going to be a busy month.

If you are interested, the founder of NaNoWriMo wrote a book about the process titled, "No Plot? No Problem!" subtitled, "a low stress, high velocity guide to writing a novel in 30 days". Here's a link:

His basic premise is that momentum is more important than inspiration, that once begun, and having a firm deadline, excuses for procrastination fall away. Inspiration through perspiration, if you will. He also cautions that this will give you a first draft, and that, to quote Hemingway, "The first draft of anything is s@#!". But he contends that a finished first draft, that can be worked and pounded into shape, is better than an unfinished no-draft.

It is going to be a big change in my writing style. I normally write a few lines and then go back and revise and correct things. I spend too much time fussing over things and not enough time writing.

The NaNoWriMo is the perfect opportunity to change things up and chase a goal of finishing a novel. Although it will require a great deal of polishing afterwords.

Of course if my luck changes and my employment status improves I may not have the free time to devote to this project. At least this year I have the time.

Good work Gray. I'm a little over 6K words myself. A little off the pace, I've got to pick it up.

I have about 5 chapters roughed out for a Traveller-based novel or novella, not sure how long it will go. Depends on how much background that I add to it, and if I add some additional thoughts. Anyone interested in looking over what I have so far? The setting is in the Spinward Marches, circa 1100, peaceful, using my OTU with some modifications to ship characteristics to make the story work properly. Chapters are the first two, a couple in the middle, and the last one.
