A high roll on C5 during character generation

If you roll a high C5 8+ (EDU) do you automatically gain the degrees (and addition skills/levels) or do you still need to proceed through the education process, beginning with a Bachelors?

It is the phrase on pg 66 "Education is level of schooling (not necessarily attendance)" that has me confused.

I looked throughout the rules and errata and can not find a definitive answer.

C5 8+ is equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree or greater.

It could mean the character been home schooled or self educated to the same as a degree level education.

The character could have a degree or greater academic award thats not recognized in the Imperium.

The character could have had the course content downloaded into his/her/its brain.

Or the character just might have gone through a university education "off-screen" in his background rather than going through the process out lined in character generation. But you probably shouldn't get a Major or Minor this way

At this point I am playing it that you have extreme potential to achieve the equivalent education lvl, but you have yet to embark on the education.

So the character may have book learning or a strong aptitude toward learning but has yet to be trained formally nor been exposed to the full spectrum of a particular skill or knowledge base.

I tend to view EDU as your learning potential during character creation. Think of it as if you have a good deal of commonsense and an ability to learn. It sort of reminds me of the guys who just breeze through college with great grades. They would have gone into college with a high EDU, which explains their easy time in college and at least part of the reason they end up as honour students.

A good way to think of it is to remember that folks can have high potential, but University degrees are a sign to others that you were willing and able to put up with the deliberately rigid requirements established to get that degree. Education can come from multiple places, degrees require that attendance.

Personally, I lean more toward the home schooled or self educated view. Maybe the character's Homeworld had an excellent public education system, or maybe the character just read everything they could find since they were able to read. Ultimately, how you or the player agree to explain the high Edu is the right way.

However, having a high Edu is not the same as having a Bachelors or higher advanced degree. It does make it a lot easier to get one. Note that to get promoted in the Scholar career, you need Edu 8+ but you don't need to have an advanced degree.

To specifically answer your question, Muzzlehead, you will still need to progress through the education process if you want a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree and you must start with a bachelor's.
