Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
There are several places where the old one minute combat round is still stated in the revision. That part of the text needs to be changed. Take a look at the new combat chapter, page 177, you'll see that the time scale has been changed to 15 seconds.
I'm on the Combat "rewrite committee" for T5, and one of the suggestions I made, Marc decided to keep. The idea behind the 15 second combat round is that it's easier to accept firing at a few targets.
Now, a character can attack up to three targets in 15 seconds, replacing the idea in the original version of the rules where a character could only attack one target in a 1 minute round.
Note that the combat round is still abstract. It's about 15 seconds on average. Some rounds are only a moment--less than a second. Some rounds can be much longer than 15 seconds. But, if you fight for four combat rounds, then, you can estimate that about one minutes has transpired.
The neat aspect of it is that Classic Traveller has a 15 second combat round.
1d6 for everyone isn't good enough. The strength (and the mass, in my opinion) of the attacker must factor into melee damage. Otherwise, a trained gladiator hits no harder than a sales clerk. A child hits just as hard as an adult.
That breaks suspension of disbelief for me. It makes for something that will cause my players to grumble, especially those with high strength characters who have earned high melee/fighting skills.
Consider beasts. They are melee combatants. Claws do 1d6. Should a tiger do as much damage as a bobcat, or an eagle? They do under their current combat system.
