Zhodani Spy Ranks

Blue Ghost

I dont' know where my Zho alien module is, and am wondering if you Traveller minded types can tell me a typical military rank (probably Navy) for a Zho spy who's been sent to the Imperium?

Yes, intrigue abounds. :)

I don't know of anything in canon, but if he's a spy, then he's very likely psionic - that's just too useful - and therefore very likely an officer. If he's being trusted to function independently or even semi-independently, then he's experienced and has sufficient rank to make some independent decisions - probably at least a lieutenant, maybe a lieutenant commander or commander if he's operating independently, with missions tailored to his rank. (in other words, the commander gets the "double-O" type missions and might command a team of other agents on a particular mission, while the lieutenant gets the less sensitive basic intelligence-gathering missions.)

At Captain grade and above, I'd expect him to be assigned a "desk job" coordinating the activities of other field agents, so if he's an active field agent, anything between lieutenant and commander. There might be lower ranks among those assigned to support the field agent: the Embassy, a trade mission, a safe house, the kind of settings where they'd have supervision and a fairly straightforward assignment that didn't require independent decision-making. Those would be your journeymen learning the spy trade.

Don't know about the spy bit, but you can find a list of Zho naval ranks and their translations here. (Note that the rank insignia are IMTU but the actual ranks themselves are canon.)

According to Mongoose AM4, there are 2 career pathes in the Agent profession:

1. Tozjabr (Intelligence)
2. Tavrchedl' (Thought Police)

The Ranks for Tozjabr are:

0. Analyst
1. Defender of 20
2. Defender of 50
3. Defender of 100
4. Defender of 500
5. Defender of 1,000
6. Defender of 5,000

Hope this helps.

First things for asking this question since my campaign centers around a Zho spy running the scouts of the 5 Sisters subsector..shhh dont tell anyone. Now one of my pcs was an Imperial naval lieutenant before he moved into intelligence. He mustered out as a Lieutenant and Baron even though he was the head of the 208 fleet intelligence.

This being said IMT active/field intelligence officers seldom continue to advance their military rank. Lets face it my Zho spy can not very well take a promotion exam if they are busy running Imperial Scouts.

The CinC for Naval Intelligence in Regina Subsector was a rear admiral.

He was probably never a field agent ;) Plus the 5 Sisters in MTU is a frontier where everything is understrength and unorthodox. The moto of the Admiral in charge "We do what it takes to secure the frontier"

Almost certainly not. (It was Lord Frederick Santanocheev; his previous post was as attache on Mora).

Sure, the 208th may well be understrength (it is commanded by a vice admiral IMTU), but there's a limit to how understrength it can be and still make sense as a separate fleet. The CinC Naval Intelligence is quite probably only a commodore. Possibly only a (fairly senior) captain.

(In the OTU, of course. I'm not trying to tell you how to run your TU.)

Yes, but the spy isn't near any other Zhodani, so he won't be able to be promoted or anything, because no-one's there to judge his "performance". And the CinC could have become CinC after his field service.

Spies generally don't operate in a vacuum. A field agent is quite likely to be a lowly lieutenant (assuming he was a military spy), but he wouldn't be the spy in charge of a subsector operation. That would be the cultural attache at the Zhodani embassy on Iderati. ;)
