When do mishaps happen? Failure Table?

Cymew

SOC-12
I sat down and took a look at Grand Survey today, and found that on the one page summary of the DGP Task System, there was a Failure Table.

When I checked my MT rules, I couldn't find the Failure Table there, and the rules is a bit hazy on the subject when a Mishap occurs.

So, is the Failure Table MIA or is there another procedure I have missed, or are Hazardrous and Fateful the only tasks that can result in a mishap?

Some. On page 14, right-hand column under the heading Automatic Failure talks about Mishaps from Hazardous and Fateful tasks. It also says that if you roll "snakeyes" this is a fumble mishap which confused me a bit. Is this a special kind of mishap and there is a not-so-severe mishap as well? Or is Fateful and Hazardous the only other possibilities for a mishap?

Maybe I'm overinterpreting that fumble...

The thing is on the previous page, under Confrontation there is a mishap if the Offender is successful and the defender isn't, the latter should roll for mishaps. It mentions hand-to-hand combat as an example of this but in h2h you don't roll for mishaps!

Maybe I'm reading to much into these rules...

I am often not understanding things that are clearly written out, and misinterpreting things out of a subordinate clause that wasn't meant to mean much. Thanks for helping out! If I actually got to play these rules I might have learnt then after a while.

The reason I asked is that when reading about Jump malfunctions, I couln't make out how it was actually caused, and if a mishap occured then or not.

I'm a bit confused, you see. It's the way I am.

A mishap occurs when:
</font>
  • the task is fateful and fails</font>
  • a natural 2 is rolled and the task is not safe, and not (easy taking extra time.)</font>
  • failed by 2+ points (4+ is what I use).</font>

Thanks for setting the record straight, guys! As it usual is the rules makes sense, reading them again after someone tells me they are not as complicated as I thought.

Now I'm going to re-read the rules about starship malfunctions and hopefully it will all make more sense this time...

Keep in mind: if one doesn't take extra time on the uncertain tasks, implement a warning light. Likewise, a minor mishap should also implement a warning light.

The mishap rules are in the Ref's Manual.
