This was going to be an adventure seed on my blog. And I may try to make a game out of it, but, I didn't want to wait to share it with you people. Imagine you and your players are parked on the downport, and you've got minutes to get into your ship and make a getaway.

Anything small enough to escape from is small enough that it's artificial.

Well, everything's small enough to escape from if you spot it from far enough away. I suspect the local starport authority is going to notice a multi solar mass gravitational source coming in from a pretty good distance off. I think the crew's big headache will be to keep from getting seized by the local rulers as they try to make their own escape.

You can, theoretically, make black holes with masses down to about 22 µg, but that small, and it's going to go away in a few nanoseconds.

The minimum long term stable is 10^19 g. But a short term stable could be as low as a about 10^9g (a million kg, or 1000 tonnes). And it would be positively glowing just outside the Schwarzschild radius from Hawking radiation. It would need to be fed constantly to last. Still, a 1 kiloton artificial black hole is plenty to collapse Vulcan to a neutron star...

And the minimum natural is about 2 solar masses, from what I've read. And that's going to sit as a neutron star a while before it cools enough to collapse the rest of the way, if I understand the physicists talking about it correctly.

Possibly, but maybe your players were escorting a VIP NPC/Patron of some kind, and he's flying towards the pad at full speed. Maybe your players are just greedy, and think they can get away in time, so procrastinated by looting the town after everyone had left or something.

It would be most entertaining to referee such a session, and see the expression on their faces when you tell them that mountain sized chunks of earth are flying up into the sky on the horizon. Maybe it's time to try that "jump from the landing pad" skill,

I would have thought, with gravity sufficient to pluck mountains out of the crust, that anything not tied down would have already been plucked up and out - including the atmosphere. I don't think there's be anyone left on the surface to witness the flying mountains.

The thought had occurred to me, but I thought that not just proximity but orientation might buy you a few minutes.
 
On Discovery Science, I think its in 'How the Universe is Made', talks about this and how there would be nothing we could do about it. It shows atmosphere and anthing not attached going up first. Of course, it would depend on how many gravities the black hole had.

If like the one at the center of our galaxy, with a gravity of millions of Earths, good bye solar system.

But if its small, with say the gravity of Vista, an asteroid, it might wind up orbiting the Earth. Then we would start to have problems.

One of the Through the wormhole shows with Morgan Freeman, postulates that the Bermuda Triangle is the home of a micro-black hole.

If the mass of the BH was minimal (~1.4 Sols), it could slide through the system past the orbit of Jupiter, and likely not cause any major problems like tidal waves, polar tilt, magnetic field shift, and so forth.

But if any of the GGs happened to be orbiting near the BH's path, then we might soon be witnessing our own global train wreck in very slow motion.
 
I pictured PCs on a tarmac as the atmosphere was getting sucked away like a strong wind, giving them a brief window of normal breathing before needing to high tail it into their ship.

I had a scenario where the planet had already been evacuated, but their patron or a PC, or both, were away from the ship, and trying to get back. Either they make it just in the nick of time, or they need to attempt a jump from the landing pad. What was the DM for a misjump while landed? +10? +12? I'm sure someone'll look it up and correct me. Regardless, it's the kind of Referee I tend to be :devil:
